New shiba owner

edited January 2008 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
Hello all my name is bill i bought my wife a shiba puppy for her birthday so i guess WE are new shiba owners. Our shiba is about 6.5 months old now her name is hopper she is the most adorable little thing i know. I will post pictures very very soon of some of the stages we have had her. Just a few questions  1. when do they make the funny noises i hear about ours doesn't she is all about playing  and sleeping  2. Sometimes when she is sleeping she twitches and makes whimpering noises should i be alarmed or no i feel bad and think she might have breathing problems and i wake her, is this wise or should i let her be?  3. She sometimes has to go potty alot more then normal like last night for instance she had to go 5 times  does this happen to your shiba?

    Welcome Bill,

    1. The shiba scream seems to only happen from distress, or extreme excitement. Like nails getting trimmed, or in my case (and Brandon's apparently ) driving to the dog park.

    2. Sounds like Hopper is having dreams. She is probably just chasing squirrels in her head.

    3. She's a puppy. Her bladder and digestive system are developing. When she is done growing she will go far less often, but right now she is growing, and getting accustomed to a new home.

Enjoy her! And get ready, she will likely start chewing soon. She is probably just about to start losing her baby teeth. NylaBones will be your best friends. I also used frozen marrow bones.

    Looking forward to your pictures.

Hi Bill - Welcome to the forum! Congrats on the new puppy! Smile

Here are my answers - but hopefully others will answer too because I'm sure they can add more:

    1. when do they make the funny noises i hear about ours doesn't she is all about playing  and sleeping: Trust me, you wil hear it - its usually not a good thing. Ours only Shiba scream when they are hurt or being violated (in a Shibas mind simply touching them when they are not in the mood can be considered a violation)

    2. Sometimes when she is sleeping she twitches and makes whimpering noises should i be alarmed or no i feel bad and think she might have breathing problems and i wake her, is this wise or should i let her be?: Sounds like a bad puppy dream, all of our puppies do this from time to time, tho Kona does it the most. I wouldn't wake them, but if you do want to wake them do it gently and calmly. As a puppy Ahi would bark when she was dreaming.

    3. She sometimes has to go potty a lot more then normal like last night for instance she had to go 5 times does this happen to your shiba?: What type of potty? #1 or #2?

If Hopper is going way more than you think is normal, or is going inside and usually doesn't you might want to take her to the vet to check and see if she has a bladder or urinary tract infection.  Also if she has been spayed recently, that could be effecting her bathroom habbits/control.

Some Shibas make a lot of funny noises (when playing, excited, in pain, or just because) but some are don't really make too many noises at all.  Nemo can be a big time talker, but some of my friends Shibas rarely make a peep.

Hi Bill! Welcome to the forum!

Portia, my boxer has dreams all the time!  She twiches a lot and makes all kinds of noises.  Sometimes it gets kind of crazy so i gently shake her and pet her to wake her up.  I don't think its anything to be worried about.

About the noises, I've only heard Ninja scream when he's at the vet.  He is very shy and gets very scared when strangers are handling him.  The last 2 vet visits he was screaming like crazy.  But there was no harm done, I think it was just because he was uncomfortable.  Ninja has started to make an odd noise when we come home and he greets us...kind of grunt/whimper noise.  At the dog park, I met a Shiba who was making all kinds of noises/screams while chasing and wrestling other dogs.

Hope to see some pics of your pup soon!

    Welcome!  She is beautiful!

You will hear the scream in due time, you may be intrigued now but will fear it in the future!  Wink  There is a post on here about shiba screams with some video's.

You have a puppy that sleeps???  lucky you!!

Ditto on the dreaming.  Both my girls do it, loud pitch whoops are too funny!

Niko was potty trained immediately at 6 weeks and has only woken us 4 x in 2 1/2 years...

Awww...what a sweet girl you have!

Lynx, my Malinois, also has dreams where she is "running" (moving her legs or twitching), whimpering, whining, growling, barking (short barks). It's very amusing to watch. The first time she did this as a puppy though, I was scared and thought she was having seizures (there was movement but no sound). Though uncommon, it is an issue within my breed. Thankfully they were only dreams!

Well, welcome glad to have you here. =(^-^)= Be sure and post some videos too, if you can.

Your planning on breeding an oversized white female?

  • edited November -1
she isnt oversized as in fat just bigger then her parents as in all around size  height length u know but in no way is she a chubby  she is all muscle..  shikoku you have one of my three favorite dog breeds the malinois are one of the beautiful ones i would love to see pictures....
  • edited November -1

No what I am saying is she is oversized in the fact that she does not fit to Shiba size standards.  Also her coat color is a fault.  I'm not trying to be rude, but Hopper is not a good candidate for breeding.

To many people on here, breeding dogs is a very serious thing.  It is not something that is taken lightly, it is not something you do with a "pet" quality dog.  There are already many Shibas in shelters and rescue, there really don't need to be more of them, just for the sake of breeding.

There are a lot of costs involved in breeding healthy dogs.  There are people that know more than I do about the subject.  It just seems you may be taking the idea of breeding dogs lightly.

brandon i completly understand what you mean but i am no stranger to the breeding world before my father passed away i grew up my whole life breeding german and malinois shepards so i know what to expect. I just thought about breeeding her but i am still very unsure about it because i dont know how she would react to the situation. some owners try to breed the dog and realize the female didnt want to take it and everything goe3s wrong with her health and i DO NOT want to risk the health of my shiba.

I have treaded lightly with this because I wasnt sure what to say and how to not come off rude (as it often does in forums and in writing and I am a bit of a bitch without realizing it...)

Not knowing your hx on breeding and your knowledge it is difficult to not jump on this in order to protect the breed and look out for those in the shelters already.  From my knowledge cream shiba's are not bred, they do not meet standards.  There are so many cream shiba's and non-standard shiba's  in shelters and pet stores because they are "unacceptable".  Now I love them to death but they are commonly "unwanted".  I had posted a link of 4 shiba's here in GA that were put in rescue because they were not standard.  Also all the genetic testing and so on is a absolute must and it is even more important to go above and beyond to garuntee healthy pups to better the breed...

As Brandon said this is something many of us here take very seriously and are touchy on because many of use rescue as well and have had many bad and good breeder experiences.

Hello, Bill, I agree with what Rachael and Brandon stated above and you really should not breed her because, well simply she is oversized and white.  She would probably produce puppies with genetic issues.  You should at least wait to see if her personality develops into a dog worthy of breeding.  Typically you wouldn't want to breed a dog with aggression or fear issues.  You really should pay for tests to be done to certify that her eyes, hips, patellas, heart, etc., etc. are healthy before breeding as well.  Typically a really good responsible breeder puts all of their money into bettering the breed instead of producing a profit.  I'm not saying that's what you are intending on doing though.  You would want to have people on a waiting list for puppies too, to insure they are ALL going to loving homes.  Did you get her from a breeder?  If so, normally Shibas breeders sell any white dogs they produce on a spay/neuter contract as a pet dog ONLY.  There is a Shiba book I have that has a section in it about white Shibas, how and why they are produced genetically and so forth, it's quite interesting and informative but I can't remember what the name of it is for the life of me!!!  I'll have to double check and post it when I get home for ya.  Jus my two cents.

Ok I found it, the book is called "The Total Shiba". Page 97 the chapter titled "Genetics for Breeders" has some good info it in regarding cream Shibas.

Bill - For someone who grew up with dogs all his life and even bred dogs, it seems a little odd that in your first post you were asking about twitching and wimpering while sleeping and having to go potty more than normal on some days. If you were breeding, i would think you would have experienced a dog having a dream, maybe not...but all the dogs i have ever owned, i have seen them dream. To be honest, just by your posts, it doesn't seem that you are ready for breeding. I am not trying to put you down or anything, so please don't take this too personally. I agree with the other members who posted above. I think any breeder of any specific dog should take the time and money to do necesary tests to determine if the dog meets the standards and is breeding quality. Im not sure how your family was breeding dogs before, but im sure you have experience with this.

Im sorry if I sound bitchy or offensive, but this is a sore subject for me. I got Ninja from a breeder who I thought was reputable. He was a responsible breeder, but does not breed for the better of the breed. Ninja has anxiety and fear issues around strangers. We had a very bad vet experience that just put me over the top. I contacted the breeder and informed him of the bad experience and if anything had happened to Ninja while he was young. His response of course was that he was well socialized..well obviously not. He said I could return Ninja for a full refund, but of course I would not. Then later he stated that his father is very shy and took a while for him to warm up to new people. If he was breeding for the love of the breed, he would not have bred a dog with that type of temperment. I guess its partially my fault that I didn't do enough research on this breeder before purchasing, but I am being a responsible owner trying to do everything I can to help Ninja overcome his issues.

Brad's Shiba Maui also was bred with a poor temperment. And its just horrible to know that there are backyard breeders out there breeding for money instead of the well-being of the dog. Im not implying that is what you are going to do. But just as a owners point of view with a Shiba with a poor temperment, I hope that you put this in great consideration. There are too many homeless dogs out there who are being euthanized everyday because of irresponsible breeders and owners who just don't want deal with all the issues. And it would be a tragedy to find that Shiba Inu's are known to be this kind of dog or that kind of dog. Pit bulls for instance have a very bad rep for being aggressive fighting dogs, when in reality there are some who were trained for that, but soooo many that are lovable, loyal, great dogs but get passed by because of their breed.

Again, please don't take any offense to this, this is just my opinion on the subject and you have the right to do whatever you want to do...I just hope that you put all our advice into consideration when you think about breeding. Trust me, many times have I thought "I love Ninja, I want to start breeding Shiba's!" But in reality, I don't have any experience or knowledge about breeding...I swear I learn something new everyday about Shiba's on this forum. So I can imagine how you might feel about breeding...Shiba's are awesome dogs.

Being on this forum really helped me with a lot of issues I was having with Ninja and put all my fairy tale stories to an end and kind of put me back into reality. Ive had dogs in my family all my life, but never thought of breed standards and temperments.  I just thought a dog is a dog.  Ever since I joined this forum...I feel like im a new dog owner because I learn soooo much that I had no clue about.  Breeding seems easy for people who really don't know much about dogs. You can like a dog and think it would be cool to make puppies...but I don't think many dog owners really know about temperment and breed standards and don't really put it into consideration. Ninja really opened my eyes, before i got him, I thought...as long as I socialize they will be a great dog. I never knew dogs came with issues and fears. So he's taught me a lot, and Im doing my best to help him.

Sorry for the long post! Again, this is somewhat a sore subject for me...and please please don't take any offense to this, it is just my opinion and thoughts...I am not trying to judge you in any way.

I hope he understands that we weren't trying to bash on him for wanting to breed.  Just that we hope he takes the necessary precautions to breed for the better of the breed.  If I offended him, I apologize and didn't mean any disrespect.  I hope he comes back soon and shares more stories and pictures of his adorable little hopper.
