Some over due pics from my visit at Peggy's (O'ikon)

edited October 2009 in Shikoku Ken (四国犬)
These are pics I took when we visited Peggy's place on our way back from the MADshiba picnic in August. She was a great hostess, allowing us to walk our pups around her property after spending 8 hours in the car.

I finally got the oomph to ask her if I was allowed to post these, so here they are:

It was great to finally meet Peggy and just amazed at meeting so many shikas that weekend. Maya was a sweety, though our visit made her a little nervous. And Aki (as well as most of the other pups) was not liking our intrusion and the strange dogs we brought with us.

Ah, Beth, it might not have just been that her dogs didn't like your dogs....I know when Dan and I visited to pick up Kuma, we also visited her kennels (at her old place) and the "boys" were definitely a bit riled up (Aki and Tekai). When they want too, they certainly did seem bigger than they really are (if you know what I mean, barking and all). Beautiful as anything, but we were "intruding" into their kennel space. Now Sweety was out in the yard on her tie out and she was friendly.

I always have thought about it since and think that because they were in their kennel and surrounding but other dogs (ie, the pack) that that environment induced more aggressive barking. One on one, I bet they would be great. And since my Kuma came from Peggy's kennel and he is just so sweet with everyone, it confirms my suspicion that it was the fact that they were with their pack in the kennel vs 1 on 1. Anyway, IMHO.

I love Peggy's dark coated Shikoku. They are beautiful (love my red one too, but really like the dark ones!)

    Great looking Shikas.

Has anyone on the forum heard whether Shibas and Shikoku were deliberately cross-bred at some point?

The reason I ask: Sukoshi is taller (16 in. at withers when she holds still), fairly long of build, and has always weighed in the 30 lbs. range. Her fur is rather full and dense in comparison to other Shibas. She is definitely a Shiba, but her "configuration" is closer to some of the older Shiba pictures.

Just wondering after looking at various Shikoku and their markings...

Ah, I look forward to when I can visit Miss Peggy...not sure when I'll be in Ohio though. Thanks for the pics. Maya is such a sweetie - so CUTE! The girls always act so cutesy.

It seems that the Shikoku boys are more territorial then the females, I think. Both genders will sound the alarm though. Alert dogs...go figure :) .

    Gail,

I'm sure Shikoku and Shiba derived from the same ancestors. I think a more "common" cross-breeding with Shikoku would be between Kishu and Kai...since a lot of Japanese hunters hunt with not just Japanese "purebreds" but also mixes. I've never heard of a Shiba-Shikoku cross, but I guess anything is possible in Japan -shrugs-.

"American" Shibas and rescues tend to be taller and much larger then the NIPPO Shibas. Although, my friend imported a NIPPO female Shiba from Japan and she ended up being over standard at 17 inches. So, it happens every now and then...

Aki appears to be a very handsome male and his head is just stunning from the photos. Thanks for the up close pictures.

What is the white dog with mask in the background?

Nice photos! :D I love Aki, he is so beautiful. :)

I believe the white dog in the background is an Inuit Dog, if i'm not mistaken. I think Peggy owns two of them.

Ditto to what Corina said about Siba-Shikoku mixes. All breeds have variation in size. Breed standards almost always allow for it. The looser the adherence to the standard (i.e. poor breeding practices) the more likely it is you'll find larger and smaller variations. That being said, even the U.S. it seems the reputable breeders are producing larger Shibas. Of course, if you read the breed standard for Shibas, the weight guidelines are "average for the standard height." There's a lot of wiggle room based on muscle mass that can affect the weight of your Shiba even if it is within the tolerable height range.

Kris, pretty much all the kenneled dogs were all like "Get off my property", while her kais were very nice. Peggy even took a female kai on the walk with us, and that pups recall was really good.

Katie, Peggy is practically around the block from you (according to the member location map) compared to where I live. She's along the coast of Lake Erie near the border of PA. Contact her if you want to make a visit.

Mufasa is adorableee. What type of dog is that? The inuit Dogs look pretty too :)
  • edited November -1
According to the website, Mufasa is a Shiba.

Corina and Dave- Thanks for the comments about possible Shiba-Shikoku crosses. We have pretty good cross-section of Shiba sizes and types and breeding sources in our meetup and Sukoshi (B/T) stands out as the largest female Shiba anyone has seen. Her male counterpart is a red guy --appropriately named "Moose".

Mufasa is a shiba, and I think about 13 years old.
