My mom has one, its awesome. She dehydrates liver for the dogs and they go nuts for it.

I've used it on my anxious dog, it doesn't seem to do anything for him. He's a resistant little bugger, the Thundershirt and valerian root don't seem to work either.

I went on the Shiba sub once and it was just... ugh. Most of the defaults or bigger subs are awful. I am a regular on r/dogtraining, though. There's a lot of dumb questions but the majority of people are very helpful.

I'll definitely try to make it, but I'll probably be dogless.

There are at least 2 Shikoku owners in the Vancouver (BC) area, @jikjak and @eljefespeaks who may be willing to meet with you. I don't know of any Kai owners in the area.

Have you considered going to a vet or vet behaviourist to discuss anti-anxiety medication? I know you said you don't want to medicate her too much, but consider the stress she undergoes every time you leave. Medication (and the real kind, not calmin…

4 months! Gosh, I know the NK don't like to soil their own living area, but he is just a baby. I don't expect a dog to be 100% potty trained until they're 8 months old. If you are at home, he should be watched ALL of the time. Don't allow him to s…

Practice crate games and "it's your choice"/doggy zen. With my extremely anxious dog I had to take things very slow. I made a lot of progress by tethering him, taking one step away and then click and came back. Then two steps. Then three…

I'm interested in Click to Calm and possibly a couple others. I'll send you a message later tonight when I get home.

@Mike87 Please try not to be offended, that is no one's intent here. We are all on this forum because we really care for the NK breeds. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide if now is the time for a dog, and if the Akita is right for you. No one …

@Nekopan Embargo on shipping live animals? Just searched A/C site - I don't think it applies to you: http://www.aircanada.com/cargo/en/solutions/ac_live/ac_live_restrictions.html Yep, I had problems with this part last year: November 1 to March 3…

Vancouver is actually a relatively short trip from Comox/Courtenay. If it is really that much trouble to get to Toronto, I would just pay extra to have her go there. Due to Air Canada and WestJet restrictions, the pup wouldn't be able to go in the…

I don't think we have many east coast Canadian members, but I will try to ask around.

There are very few hunters on this forum, and I don't think any of them posted in this thread.

As a person who got a puppy in the last 6 months of my degree, I wish I had waited. I ended up eating through my savings. I thought I had enough saved up, but it turns out I didn't take everything into account. All of my friends with dogs that I th…

We cut beef liver into bitesize pieces or small strips, and dehydrate it. The dogs go nuts for it. Even our picky cats think it's the best thing in the world.

In general, backs have too much bone to be fed on their own. If she isn't sure what to do, I would ease her in with chunks of raw chicken (no bone). If that goes well, move on to chicken necks. Keep in mind you may have to hold it for her a couple t…

I thought of this thread today while I was out with the dogs. We met a B&T Shiba. Shibas are common enough, but I rarely see the black and tans.

I feed twice a day as well, because my dog pukes bile if he doesn't eat frequently enough. However, feeding only one meal a day is perfectly fine. Keep in mind that you don't need to have every meal or even every day totally balanced, as long as it…

The raw thread on the Shiba side is really good. @Saya is really knowledgeable and has posted great links and pictures there. Here are some of the resources from the first post: PERSONAL RAW FEEDING GUIDE a handy spreadsheet that helps get idea on …
