@violet_in_seville -- This thread has been beyond informative, and I'm really glad for that. When I started it, I had no idea that there were really such differences within the different registration organizations, and that was really enlightening. …

@tjbart17 -- I get that I don't have any experience with the Kai, but then everyone was at that point at one stage, and I'm as certain as I can be that I have the fortitude for it. I'll be paying really close attention to sire/dam temperaments when …
-
@tjbart17 -- I don't know, I've had to deal with temperament issues before, and I always did fine... I guess Jake's an extreme case? Anyway, I'd like to give myself a little more credit than that... I've always worked really hard to keep my dogs wel…

@tjbart17 -- This is all really disheartening... I really need to make a trip out to Michigan to see her facilities for myself before I follow through with getting one of her Kai.
-
@cdenney -- that NIPPO show looks like it'd be a lot of fun! I'd love to go, but I'm starting a new job in San Antonio a couple weeks before then, so I wouldn't be able to get the time off. :( I hope you guys who end up going take lots of pics for t…

@tjbart17 -- http://www.classykennel.com/CLASSY_KENNEL.html. If the info on that page is accurate, the puppies are raised indoors, but the adult dogs spend most of their time in the kennels.

#violet_in_seville: I really appreciate your comments and will address them more fully in the morning, when I have more time to invest (I live on the East Coast, and have to work at 5AM). I've spent many hours that I should have been sleeping delibe…

This puts me in a really awkward situation because I'd seriously consider forfeiting my deposit except for the fact that the kennel would only end up with an essentially unearned $200 and get another deposit from someone else... The best I can think…

Well, I for one am really glad that there's hope now. I'd have never known what I lost out on if it hadn't been for this forum... Which probably never would've happened without those breeders who got into the business to diversify the American gene …
-
@violet_in_seville: it also seems strange that the UKC standards state that white shouldn't blend up into the coat, but then somehow condones light colored Kai... Even more so that it insinuates (but doesn't say exactly) that puppies are born either…

I didn't realize there was only one KKA breeder in the US or I wouldn't have mentioned it, didn't want to draw attention to someone who seems to be really nice about everything... I haven't asked Marian yet, how often her lines throw creams, but she…
-
@tjbart17 -- one important part to remember is that I had no idea prior to this thread that there were Kai breeders out there who did NOT breed to the Japanese standard. Did not even think it was an option. So then today, presented with the option, …
-
@tjbart17 -- I'd never be so naive to suggest to someone who takes their breed very seriously that they don't breed to the "real" standard... I know a pointless argument when I see one. Particularly since I have much less experience with t…

I started the thread more as an after thought, really... I had NO idea there was as much if a difference as there seems to be... Call it ignorance? At any rate, I'm glad I asked the question, but I'm sure that my Classy Kai will end up being my dogg…
-
@jeffnkazuko, could you give some examples?
-
@ayk -- Oh no, I definitely don't mean to blame anyone! Marian was pretty clear about her breeding practices in my discussions with her, and she seems to put a lot of effort into her puppies. As far as that's concerned, there are absolutely no issue…
-
Also, as soon as I get my Kai I'll post some pics so you all can weigh in on how it holds up to KKA standards.
-
Well in that case, I hope this thread goes a long way into helping correct the problem... if KKA advocates don't speak up about the issue and put a little pressure on the opposition, then they're not going to see much improvement. ESPECIALLY since t…
-
@tjbart 17 -- Classy Kennel. Marian really seemed to know what she was talking about, and she seemed pretty sincere about preserving the breed standard... perhaps there are some UKC breeders on the same page as KKA advocates?
-
@shibamistress -- I have a 1-year-old shiba now, and when I was trying to find a breeder, I was SOOO close to going with RightPuppy because they were pretty close to where I lived at the time... ended up going with Frerose Kennel instead, great deci…

where KKA = "Kai Ken of America" !!!! *cough (Brad) cough* EDIT: Side note -- I see what they mean now when they say that discussion of the different registries can get heated... I hate to have started it, but you guys have really clarifi…
-
@tjbart17 -- thanks so much for the info, that is very helpful.
-
@poeticdragon -- That seems like what I'd like to do, but I'm hearing that KKA Kai are pretty different from "American" Kai (which I assume means UKC), so UKC dogs may not be accepted into the KKA. Any thoughts on that?
-
Thanks, @brad... I guess what's most important to me is historic preservation... I think the Nihonken in the US ought to be bred as closely to the traditional, Japanese standard as possible. Intuition says this is more likely to be the case with KKA…
