LOL Marita, you do realise that Tanuki's mom is called Zoomie/Zoom-Zoom :-)
-
He is very promising, Claire! I hope you get to keep him!

Most of our dogs were weaned on raw and that is what they ate all their life. For the first litter we did the same, when it was weaning time they got beef and chicken wings/necks. Unfortunately, some of the new owners were not fans of raw feeding an…

LOL indeed! it is an honour to see my nickname used for such handsome pups :-) i think i will graciously accept one to be sent my way, after all, it's destiny lol

I love the nice round muzzles on them and tight lips, unfortunately you don't see that as often as you should. We are trying to breed that back in Europe.

I agree with @shibamistress, AAs are good property guard dogs, I have friends with AAs that have chased the ass off uninvited people in the yard. But if you want more than just instinct you need to work them with a very very good trainer that unders…

I am owner and breeder of JA. I had only one situation when my dog reacted. I got into an argument with a not so friendly neighbour about my dog Tenshi (male, a few years old at the time) and a couple of minutes later when the neighbour came too c…

Most of them are wrinkly as puppies and lose 90% of the wrinkles as adults. There are some, exaggerated ones, that are very wrinkled even as adults, but from what I saw in the ring they are losing ground. Here is one of my friend's dogs, he is actu…

:-) My good friend and vet is Shar Pei breeder, so I got to know quite a lot about them, behaviour-wise they are as close to Akitas as another dog breed can be. They are as old if not older than Akita and Shiba and they have been isolated geografi…

Edited to be nicer to the vet: Has a specialist confirmed she has entropian, took a look at the cornea and all? It may very well be the case of a growth stage, tacking works wonders. You should ask a sharpei breeder to recommend a good vet for tacki…

Um, 100% in agreement with the substance of the thread, but that sharpei shouldn't be there, genetically they are even older than Akitas and Shibas according to DNA studies, they are one of the closest breeds to the wolf.

@Eamon79 there is a huge difference between Orijen and TOTW, I stand by @rikumom's advice, no high protein kibble was digested well by our JAs and they didn't fair well on kibble that had more than 26-27% protein. We also give adult food to the pups…

Very sorry :-(

:-))) Sorry Nihon Ken Forum, Aiko dogs are a big family :-)

Small world! Hey Peter, Irina here. Tsuki sends a big hug to her sis.

Great photos, thanks!

Out of coat = usually means the dog has no undercoat, you usually say a dog in not yet in full coat if the undercoat is 1/2 grown. My JAs are silly, they can be out of coat in the middle of winter and be in coat during summer months. Being in coat/o…

Ouch Mike, play nice. Hunting in the US or Japan is totally different than hunting in Europe and even over here there are many hunters that love their dogs and look after their wellbeing. Every dog should be able to be put to use in order to do what…

Ouch thanks @rikumom!!

Oh, great thread and most welcome, I am just considering getting a new vacuum. Um, I admit I am rather lazy :D I am considering getting a robot dust cleaner, have any of you used it? Are they effective for Akita and cat hair ??
-
I got my first Akita when I was in my final year as an undergrad, knowing precisely I could no longer take care of it properly once I got a job. Afterwards I was unfortunate enough to go through major knee surgery and later on getting my postgraduat…

LOL Nice looking hips :-)

Fingers crossed!! You are lucky to have so few pups, it's the second time we have many puppies in a litter and it is very difficult for both the pups and us.
-
LOL @poeticdragon, that is hilarious. I got to choose two of my dogs' pedigree names - the breeder told me the theme of the litter (for Tsuki it was Kokai - red sea and for the Kito it was Yuki - snow) and their call names are based on the pedigree…

Unfortunately there are many Akitas coming from backyard breeders and from puppy mills over here. The prices are outrageous, around 250-500 euros. No good breeder can compete with these prices. The females are bred at every heat cycle until they die…
