Well, I was taking a break from fostering until I built my fence, but this guy parked himself on my porch and told me to foster him. I called local animal control, which works closely with the agency I foster for, so he's got a three-day waiting period to see if his owners are looking for him and then he goes up for adoption. I'll put up a sign at the post office, too, but based on how lost he was acting, it seems like he was dumped.

I've been calling him Brown Bear.

Brown Bear is a good name for him, maybe even Grizzly. Is he in the house now, or are you still keeping him outside?

His collar looks old and worn, and it looks like he may have been tied up with plastic twine? Is he filthy like he has been outside a long time? His nails don't look very long in that picture, looks pretty healthy actually.

Anyway, he is VERY cute. I am sure he will be adopted out pretty quickly if he is as cuddly as he looks! :)

Oh yeah, he does look like the chessie... the eyes, especially. He is dirty and wet in that picture, but he looked the same after I washed him and he dried off, too. His fur is pretty greasy, so he probably is a chessie. I should take him to the vet to get scanned. If he's purebred he might have a chip.

His nails are short. They don't look trimmed, though, they look worn from a lot of walking. Hard to say. He was really dirty, but it doesn't take long to get dirty. He had obviously been swimming in the pond and rolling in manure. It does look like he was tied up, so I'll talk to some of my neighbours. I don't have a lot of neighbours, so that won't take long. I'll put up a sign at the post office, too. I'm not sure how old he is, but he walks really stiff in the hind legs. He gets around okay, just stiff... and he only ever runs a metre or so, then he stops. He isn't neutered, so if he did escape, that might explain the wanderlust. Maybe he could smell Skella? She's not in heat or anything, though.

I also noticed just today that he has a small puncture in the top of his head. I wonder if he was bitten. It looks a few days old.

He looks colorpoint, just for fun I want to call him a Siamese Mountain Bear Dog, lol. He's cute! He looks in pretty decent shape too. It's good that your keeping him for awhile.

I hope he finds his home soon. Whether it'd be "former" or "new", so long as it's a good family. Poor baby might have gotten into a few "tuffs & scrapes" on his way to your place.

Well, we found the owner. Someone I know from church, actually. He sure came a long way to get here! I guess he's been missing for a while. He seems to really like it here, I almost wonder if he'll come back. Apparently, he doesn't get much attention or exercise at his house :-(.

How long is "long"? and how long is a "while"? I can't imagine how distraught I'd be to find my pet missing, nor imagine the kind of euphoria and relief to know the dog has been found.

Agreed, especially if you really like the dog.

OR, if they truely want him back, perhaps offer a "doggie daycare" type of thing for him? What'd they get him for anyways...just as a pet??? He does make for a cute "lawn ordament" but no doggie should be this full time! He needs adventure and a job.

I don't think people who leave their dog on a tie out all the time believe in anything related to doggie day care, much less would they want to drive 20 extra miles per day so their dog could play with other dogs. If they were interested in turing him over to you, that would be great, however they probably think "he's just a dog, and he belongs outside."

If he's STILL there, I wouldn't even drop hints lol. I'd blatantly say "I think the dog would have a happier life if he just stayed with me. You better have a good excuse for why you haven't come to pick him up."

Isn't there a 3 day period (from the date he arrived at your place) for his owners to come and pick him up before he officially goes up for adoption? There's your chance. Adopt him. =0)

I haven't asked to find out their reaction yet, but I will. I'm sad that he doesn't seem to have owners that really appreciate him. It seems my FIL was really attached to him and may have hinted that he could stay with us for a while, so that might be why they didn't come get him. I hope so.

Well, apparently, there's a complicating factor, here. My SIL - who also lives on the property, about 1/4 mile away, says that Brown Bear wouldn't stop knocking her kids over, and called me up to complain that when she came down to visit, he kept knocking her kids over. Well, she's also going off her meds, if you know what I mean, so she's been kind of freaking out over everything, but she really doesn't want him back.

Not that I really understand what her problem is. I wasn't there when this happened, but he knocked Isaac over once, and then I corrected him, and after that, I just had to keep an eye on them and remind Brown Bear to ease up if he was getting too rambunctious. Plus, SIL lives sufficiently far away that it shouldn't really matter to her. I don't know why she kept letting him knock her kids over, either. I mean, come on, protect your kids.

Will "Turk's" owners welcome him with open arms and be happy that they're beloved dog has come home? Or will he be returned to run wild with the Bialinger pack? Stayed tuned...

Wow... I missed a lot this weekend.

That is really crappy dog ownership that they did not seem relieved or even happy that their dog has been found and is safe. And even crappier that they just left him there instead of coming to get him.

Maybe he will find his way back. :)

So, apparently the owners are trying to sell him, so obviously they're not too attached. I can't take him, though, because apparently everyone decided they were sick of him. Normally, I'd only care what Noah says, because it's not like I let my neighbours tell me what to do, even if they are family, but my SIL kind of lost it and I don't want to go there. It seems like pretty standard dog stuff, but I guess everyone's annoyed by him now except me. Well, his nocturnal barking is pretty irritating, that's pretty much what did it for Noah.

I think I'll tell them about the rescue I foster for. They seem pretty intent on getting money for him, though, so we'll see how that goes... I doubt they're going to find a buyer for him. That's kind of the problem with irresponsible breeding and dog ownership. You saturate the "market" with poorly-dogs (and therefore less valuable - monetarily) and don't increase their value through proper training and you really just create a problem.

    *sigh*

I doubt the dog will sell. Very sad situation. Labs are pretty rowdy for some time. Too bad for the poor guy... if training is started it most certainly gives options for a better life.

Heidi, some places will take a dog that has some obedience basics and can be controlled well around humans. If he shows up again it might well be an option if he is worked with.... If you know of any trainers that can be on standby??? I bet the boy will escape again...
Anyway, Just some food for thought.... I hate to see a good animal with some drive relegated to such a dismal life.

So his name's Chester. Sounds like a typical Chessie name, but they're pretty insistent that he's a lab. *shrug* The good news is that they say he's superbly behaved ever since he got back from our place, so they've decided to keep him. It really irritates me that they were going to get rid of him, considering his behavioural problems were so minor and easily-remedied, but I'm glad that they've decided to keep him.

I hope it works out this time around though. And that his humans knock themselves on the head with a shovel later on for even thinking about "getting rid" of him. I truely hope that Chester turns into the BEST family dog ever! Whilst they may not be able to train him...maybe he can train them? Dogs can teach people a lot things and they most certainly do!
