    Okay, I need a hand.

I just got emailed from the adoption coordinator at animal control. Fernando doesn't have much time left. If you know anyone on the east coast who is interested. Or on the west coast willing to travel. Please have them contact me or Amy. Ir they are somewhere on the East Coast, I will adopt him out and deliver him to them. Please please please help.

This is the bulletin I posted on Myspace. Feel free to post it anywhere and everywhere.

    image

When I first met him, he wouldn't stop licking me through his cage. He is one of those special spirits who touches your heart instantly.

I just got this from Amy from volunteer services of Providence. She coordinates the adoptions at Providence Animal control. He is starting to get very stressed. He NEEDS our help. Please if you can foster him, or adopt him, call Amy. At the very least send this to every animal lover you know.

She does her best to get these pups the chances they deserve.

DO NOT GET MAD AT HER!! SINCE SHE STARTED THERE MORE DOGS HAVE BEEN SAVED THAN EVER. REMEMBER THIS IS THE CITY POUND.

I will be there Friday volunteering. I am praying to walk in and hear that he has been taken in by some amazing person who wants to love him forever.

    I can't let him die.

    Hi Jessica,

Fernando is getting really stressed in the shelter, he's losing weight and his time is running out. I've attached his pictures and below is some info about him.

Fernando was picked up as a stray on 11/12. He is one sweet, playful dog. He has a lot of energy and it's all positive-his disposition is very, very nice and he is very affectionate. He seems housebroken and good with other dogs. He likes to play with rope toys and needs plenty of exercise, but isn't as high-maintenance as some dogs like him we've seen. He'd be a terrific best friend. Fernando is starting to get really stressed being in the shelter environment. He is losing weight and getting depressed. I am looking for an experienced foster or adoptive home for him. If interested please contact Amy at aimless123@gmail.com or call 401-941-6830.

  • Such a cute face!  I do hope Fernando finds a home.

I have to tell you, after visiting Petfinder.com for those critters listed under the Volunteer Services of Providence Chapter, I am shocked to see how many they have listed as "Urgent" such as Fernando.  I do hope that as folks are told about Fernando that they also are made aware of how many more there are under the same circumstances there.

I will never understand people sometimes.  My heart goes out to Fernando, Mama Cass, Brody, Scooby Doo, Deacon, Henry, Happy Bobby, and Lady; all listed under this shelter under "Urgent" status.  I do hope they find the love that we all claim to possess.  If only someone there in Providence could call upon the citizens of their great city to act promptly.   I will do my best to pass the word on.

     Best Wishes, Ron

Oh, Jessica, you have no idea how much I wish this were happening a year or two down the road!  Noah and I really want to get into fostering, especially dogs from areas that are high-kill or not pitbull friendly.  I just love his sweet face, if I could, I would take him in a heartbeat.  I will try to spread the word for you, though!  Does he have a listing on petfinder?

Post edited by Unknown User at -0001-11-30 00:00:00

  • I am on all the bully boards. It is hard because as Ron pointed out, there are so many urgent cases there. I take the most heart string tugging and then when people ask I point out that he is one of many.

Heartbreaking statistic-1 in 500 pitbulls find a home. That includes breeder pits.

Post edited by Unknown User at -0001-11-30 00:00:00

  • I could give you more, but I will spare you. Local and state governments are trying to legislate this breed into extinction. They seem to forget that these pups were the beloved pets of Teddy Roosevelt, and Helen Keller. All they know is what the new promotes. This image of vicious killing machines that cannot be trusted. In Denver they actually are going to peoples homes, seizing their family pets, and killing them (euthanizing is something you do to a sick animal beyond healing).

It is a very scary time to love a pit.

  • This is a very dear issue to my heart as you all know I also have a bully mix.  It is very difficult for me to even get started but im so glad you all are so open to the bully lovers.  I will take a bully, akita, rott over any dog (except other jap breeds) any day.  I will do anything to protect my babies and not moving back home to MN may be one due to BSL.  Jess is very right on all her stats and facts and it is petrifying!  They will not stop and any dog owner needs to be terrified of BSL because they will continue down the line and abolish all dogs by the time they are done.  Where do you stop?

*crosses fingers that everything works out as planned*  I'm really glad to hear that good news!  I know Noah will be glad, too, because he's very really confused at why I'm so emotional over a dog I know almost nothing about!  Blast these pregnancy hormones!

This reminds me of a pitbull named Cooper that was in the pound at the same time as Loki.  We almost adopted Cooper, it was between him and Loki, but we chose Loki.  For one thing, Loki was scheduled to be put down the next day and no one wants to adopt a big, black, scary-looking dog (I don't think pit bulls have the same stigma in this area), and for another it just seemed right.  Well, a couple years later, I was looking in the paper at the weekly "Animal House" page, where the local rescues post pictures of dogs and cats that are available, and I saw Cooper!  He had the same name and there was no mistaking, it was the exact same dog!  I wish I could have known what happened to him.  He was the sweetest, most darling dog ever.  I wish I could go back in time and adopt him.  Anyway, I think that experience has made me emotional over pitbulls and I secretly vowed to adopt one some day from an area where the kill rate is high.

Anyway... there I go babbling again.

That is great news - I'll be honest I have had to avoid this thread because Fernando just kinda melts my heart. His eyes just say it all! If I was not up to my eyeballs in puppies right now Jen and I would consider adopting him... but with 3 puppies and one of them about to go into heat... well I just don't know that we could give him the attention he deserves.

Anyway, I will have my fingers crossed for both of them!

  • There are presently 9007 pit bull terriers on petfinder. That number is ever increasing. I know for a fact that not all of providence's are on there.

And then of course there are the shelters that don't use petfinder.

Brad-200+ That is wonderful! Hopefully people will do something. There are so many dogs looking for a chance.

  • Here is the blog I posted on myspace. I will update it every time I work at the shelter.

    BLOG

For those of you who are smarter than me and don't waste your time on that silly site

So I recently started volunteering at Providence Animal Control. I want
to do my best to help these pups get a chance. This is the place where
assholes dump their dogs when they get too big, too old, or just aren't
as fun as they expected. They are all good dogs. Some will need more
training because they didn't get the chances they deserve early on.
Lets give them a chance now.

    ***This
boy is a LOVE (you will hear me say that about all of these). He loves
to play with toys. He is a big dog, so probably not for houses with
little kids. But if you want a big dog who will love and play with you
all day, this is your man!

    image

    ***She
is as sweet and lovely as she looks. I just kept calling her the little
blonde bombshell. She has "those" eyes. You know the ones that just
melt you from the inside out. She is a little shy. But just a lovely
    lovely mush.

    image

    ***Oh
boy. This little guy is awesome! He is just the kind of dog who can
dash in and put a smile on your face. He is gonna need a special owner.
When you first meet him, he hides. But if you come back and visit him
again he will play with you like you are the oldest of friends. That is
exactly how it happened with us. When I went to get Shelby he hid from
me. Today we were running together like he grew up with me. What a
    little monkey!

    image

    ***We
were trying so hard to figure this guy out. He obviously has some pit
in him, but his coat is thick and his brindle is almost more spotted.
Catahoula leopard dog maybe? He seemed nervous at first when we took
him out. But 5 minutes later I crouched down and he nuzzled right into
me. He is the kind of boy that makes me want to take them all home.

    image

    ***Mama
Cass. Poor thing does not know how to advertise her self. When you walk
up to her in her cage she will growl and show her teeth. Take her out
side and she will lavish you with love like she was made just for you.
She is akita/chow we think. I love this lady.

    image

    ***I
see this dog and he is the definition of "mans best friend". I want to
call him Scout and just let him go run and play in the woods. We just
can't quite figure out exactly what he is. Lets just say cute. He is a
youngster with a lot of potential.

    image

    ***And
last but not least, Fernando. By now you all know how in love with this
boy I am. He is not a dog for someone who is away from home a lot. He
is anxious. Especially after being at PAC for so many months. He needs
an experienced dog owner, who is patient and has a lot of love and time
to give. But know this, he is worth every bit of effort. I love this
boy. He is just waiting to the right mom or pop to give him the happy
    home he so deserves.

    image

    Sadly
there are so many other dogs there. There is a chin named little miss
muffet who is such a snuggle bum. There is a cairne terrier (think toto
from the wizard of oz) who is a little clown. I could go on and on.
Please, visit their Pet finder Link
and go and meet these dogs. You are saving a pups life. And I can tell
you from personal experience, they will feed your soul. If you ever
wanted to know what it really feels like to be loved, rescue a dog.

Jessica, Noah says I shouldn't read your posts anymore until we get our kennels built and can take on foster dogs, LOL.  I'm too d@mn emotional!  On the upside, I have explained to him BSL and he is now thoroughly infuriated by it and wants to start fostering pits from areas where they are being killed.  Obviously, this won't be for a year or so, seeing as we don't even have a fence yet and I'm preggo with symphysis pubis dysfunction (fancy word for hurts to walk or do anything).  But yeah... maybe someday you will be sending me a pup to foster!  Yipee!

Heidi-education is key and im glad that Noah is well educated now.

Chad refuses to foster and that kills me.  I think that he knows we would never foster, we would drown in dogs.  Sasha has opened his eyes so much to pits and he realizes that the best pieces of her personality is her pit half (nothing against rotts).

  • Oh Rachel, I love you tooKiss Do feel free to come to Providence and I will take you to volunteer with me. The only thing I take comfort in is the knowledge that if I didn't go there these pups would have nothing but their cement walls and floors and the incesent barking that could drown you.

And my heart is warmed by the fact it is one place where I know they are all happy to see me no matter what.

All those dogs are adorable and all deserve a loving home.  Gosh just makes me want to go find the owners who abadoned them and punch them in the face!!!  Jessica, I think you are really getting to me with these posts of yours.  I never realized how much dogs really mean to me.  Especially to see dogs that are helpless and handed off or let loose because of stupid humans who can't take responsibility!

I swear, we should just all move to a 100 acre property, build seperate homes and build a rescue to provide a home for all these dogs.  If only life was that easy.

When I was looking at all these dogs, Ninja came to mind...and I just thought about how he is scared of everything and gets territorial over me when I show interest in other dogs and it really makes me feel bad that I have such a poor tempered dog.  But then I think, what if someone else, less caring and responsible got him and just threw him away because of his personality.  He might have ended up as one of those dogs.   So it makes me more motivated to think that I can help Ninja overcome his fears and give him a chance at a happy life.

Sorry for the long emotional post.  We were at the dog park last night and i was petting a weimaraner puppy thats a regular there and Ninja started growling and then snapped at the puppy.  It broke my heart.  I feel so lost sometimes with him.  He is such a loving, loyal dog to John and I, and I just wish that he could relax in public and know that he's safe.  Im not sure if I can bring another puppy into my home now knowing that he gets aggressive with other dogs that i show attention to.

Anyways, Jessica, I think its really awesome of you to go out of your way and try to do the best you can do to help these dogs.  You really are my Hero!

And some asshole dumped her for animal control to pick up because they didn't want her anymore.

  • Lets start with updates on the babies you have already seen.

We have good leads for Brody the American Bulldog/Great Dane, and Lady the one I posted most recently. I brought her to the vet today. She has no front teeth. They rotted out. And she apparently is only 6 she is just that badly neglected. But we have a lady who wants her!!!

Fernando is still here and not doing well. He is so strong and has some serious anxiety issues that are not improving being at animal control.

I am presently very in love with the boy I call mystery brindle. His coat is amazing. It is almost as thick as Moto's. We don't know what he is. But he and I just have this special bond.

My blonde bombshell Sofia is doing pretty well.

I don't know how dogs this wonderful end up here. What is wrong with people?

Here are pictures of the kids I was with today.

    image

This is the first of 3 chihuahua who arrived here. They are such little loves.

    Can you believe this face?

This one I've been calling Harry (Houdini) I would walk into the dog area and he would be roaming around. He kept wiggling out of his cage. I'm hoping that spunk will get him a home quick.

Volunteering at the shelter can be so hard.  Pit bulls really do get stressed out, the longer they are there, the worse it gets, always.  Not uncommon for them to start resource guarding, and then they are considered unadoptable because they don't pass temperament tests.  Ugh.  Bleeding tails from being wagged too much, cells covered in shit because they stress and poop throughout the night and then freak out jumping up and down in it.  Mornings can really be a mess in the cage of a stressed out dog.   And I volunteer at a humane society that is by most standards a really nice facility.

For those of you who have some extra hours in your week, think about volunteering at your local shelter.  Even if you can't go everyday, once a week is nice.  You can walk dogs, pet dogs, the interaction means everything to them.  You're heart will be broken though, most likely more than once.

  • Brandon is right. I thought I wasn't strong enough to volunteer. But then I realized that every positive experience these dogs have is likely going to give them the emotional strength to get through another day.

I may cry alot. But when you here someone wants the pup that you just took pictures of for petfinder, it is better than winning the lottery.

Jess have you thought about rescueing Fernando???

Post edited by Unknown User at -0001-11-30 00:00:00

  • Yeah. I have. The main thing is he is huge. He doesn't do too well with other dogs. His prey drive is really strong (four cats and chinchilla). He has severe anxiety and dug though a wooden fence in half an hour. I am presently in an apartment with 2 dogs and a shikoku puppy on the way.

There are no pit rescue groups who have been able to foster. We have contacted 29 other rescue groups in an attempt to move him to a healthier environment.

Now my only hope is an adopter.

Have you contacted Pitbulls for Life in Calgary?  They have shipped pups from other places.  Actually, there are quite a few rescue organizations in Alberta that get most of their dogs from the US.  The places I have looked into fostering for get dogs from other areas that are high kill and I knew someone on another dog forum who worked at a shelter where they sent dogs to Alberta quite frequently.  Anyway, it's something to think about.  It doesn't hurt to contact them anyway.

    pitbull/french bulldog I think.

We call him James Dean because he knows how cool he is.

But Jay isn't even fighting me on Mystery (I have to change that name) I am going to test him with other dogs this week.

OMG, I just did a search for homeless dogs and I came across these 3 pitbull/mix puppies that are 6 weeks old.  These pups even broke John's heart.  He was like "If we had a house, we would take all 3 of them"  ugh...i need a huge house.

    *dies* I want a pit now :(

Which is VERY out of the ordinary. I thought pits were ugly little buggers till Jessica started sharing pit pictures.

  • So we tried and tried to find a place for Fernando. He was just too
sensitive for this world. His owner abandoned him because he would get
so stressed that he destroyed a couch. His owner failed him. I hope to
never meet this person. This already stressed dog, ended up in animal
    control.

We try so hard to put smiles on these dogs faces. But it is harder on
some dogs than others being locked up. Fernando couldn't handle it. He
    started to lose it.

I need to believe that he is in a better place. I need to believe that
he is going somewhere where he will never be scared or hurt. Where
people won't judge him because of his breed or size. And where there
will always be someone to rub his belly and tell him how much they love
him. I need to believe that that place exists and that he is there.

Fernando, I am so sorry. I tried do hard to find someone to love you as
much as you deserved. I am so sorry that people couldn't recognize how
much love you had to give. I am sorry that you ever had to suffer. I
    love you, and always will.

I'm sorry Jess. I know you tried your best and that is more than anyone can possibly ask of you. You have *nothing* to be sorry for. I'm sure the joy you were able to bring to his life was incredibly meaningful to him. I send you a giant hug from afar.

Cry This guy really got to me.  Jessica, honestly...you probably made this dog the happiest dog in the world just by spending a couple hours with him.   You should be very proud of yourself.  Im sure if he could talk, he would be thanking you for comforting him and loving him for the remainder of his life.  You should know, because of you, this dog was able to know what being "loved" felt like and you made it possible for him to move on in peace.  You should not feel sorry at all.  You did everything you could and he appreciates it.

  • I am sorry that there are people in this world that don't understand the gift a dog gives us by loving us unconditionally. People that treat them like objects, abuse them and abandon them.  I am sorry for Fernando and other that share his (mis) fortune.

Fortunately there are people that do know what it feels like to connect to a dog, to love him/her, and that go out of their ways to give them comfort and joy and a friendly word. No dog should be denied these things. Fernando had them through you, Jess, and for that you should be proud.

I'm really sorry Jessica.  I've been through the same and it's the worst.  The rage, the frustration, the sadness, the overwhelming feelings of guilt and failure.  Trying to help dogs isn't an easy thing to do.  Thinking of Fernando reminds me of the many dogs I have gotten to know that didn't make it to a forever home.  I'm really sorry for your loss.

I feel awful, I really wish I wasn't in College or I would have definitely tried to help, I love pitbulls. Before I got Sadie I have to admit i was afraid of most dogs. I don't really know what it was, I Had no real interest in them. But Sadie took all of three seconds to change that. I can't even imagine not having a dog anymore, I seems insane. I suppose Fernando is not suffering anymore, I just wish he was not suffering in someones house and not underground.

  • I just got a call from Amy at the shelter. She showed up this afternoon, and Fernando was still there.

Ed, the animal control officer who was supposed to take him to get put down, couldn't do it. He said he was just too good a dog...

This is about as close to a miracle as they come.

Amy worked with him today and she thinks we could train him to be a search and rescue dog. She has put a call out to every contact and resource she has.

I apologize for the emotional roller coaster. I have been on this one with you guys.

Amy saw my myspace blog and realized that she hadn't told me and rushed to call.

They all won't turn out this way but I am so grateful that this one did.

  • We gave Fernando Hamburgers. I have been sneaking him venison jerky too. Actually I sneak all the dogs venison and fish jerky. The crappy food these poor dogs have to eat, the jerky is more nutritious.

Ed is getting chocolate chip pecan cookies. I brought them all cookies on valentines day and conveniently didn't mention they were vegan and organic until they devoured all of them and I turned down a marriage proposal or six.

Jessica, what state are you in? I'm on Multiply - like My Space, only more personal, not so 'everyone be my friend'. My boyfriend's frat brother created the site 4 years ago and it's grown to something like 5M people. Anyway, if you give me some info, I'd be happy to get it out to the Multiply community. I'm sorry I didn't think of this sooner!

I am very sad to post, Fernando was put to sleep yesterday. We tried so hard to find him a home or a job. He was in the shelter for six months. That is a record here. These past couple weeks he started to show signs of deep depression. I can only pray that is somewhere where he can be loved, and at peace. He deserved better on this earth. So hopefully he can know joy now.
