I haven't stayed there but a lot of dog shows are held there. I heard that the Shiba Nationals were held there before. My impression is older, dog-friendly, budget-friendly hotel. Could use some renovation.

    Ok, good to know

So Saturday is an all breed UKC show, but Sunday will be the main event?

No shows on Sat. No all-breed shows.

It'll be two shows with the listed breeds on Sunday. Show 1/Judge 1 will be in the morning. Show 2/Judge 2 should be after lunch. 9:30 am and 1 pm respectively.

Any points earned would stay with the dogs TL number. You cannot receive a title on your dog until you have a permanent registration number. If anyone with a kka Kai is interested in getting full UKC registration, please message me. It can be done, just a certain person made it a little difficult since it did not benefit them. I have successfully done it though. With a UKC registration you can also enter UKC performance events beside conformation.

That is my understanding as to how TL numbers work. You would still place and get ribbons for the show. My personal feeling is the more the judges see the easier it will be to effect change.

I might be convinced to just go to the show and hang out with friends and see Yamabushi puppies. And drink beer.

This all came up because.. (why I asked about the UKC thing) Because Jen asked me about the show and we discussed one of us going.

There is nothing wrong with coming out to socialize but I'm not going to worry about convincing just come out and enjoy the weekend. @ayk can tell you, I handled in my first show this past November. Five years of doing this and I finally went in a ring. Showing is fun but I really enjoy bouncing around and talking to everyone. I have way more fun bullshittin with people.

I stayed there in the early 90s for a water polo tournament at Claremont Mudd Scripps College. The Hotel Claremont has come a LONG way since then. We will have a couple RV spots to offer up soon as well as a bank of rooms.

They can take Katana for me.

I won't know until like, October. I cannot predict what my work schedule will be like so far in advance. I don't even know what the upcoming week will be like... Gotta love agriculture.

At some point we should take some beer requests. If anybody is partial to any SD microbrews, just name it.

    @lindsayt, yeeesss!
  • I won't be there, but I just want it noted for the record, that should you decide to do some grilling, I am not averse to anyone publicly posting their recipes for marinades, homemade sausages, or other delicious edibles. I think we even have a very old recipe thread :-)

Random thought: if anyone out there is into homebrew, that might be a fun (and generous) thing to do. An NK invitational beer sounds kind of awesome. I may try making an NK forum beer if I do NIPPO this year.

@lindsayt That's a possibility! It would save some money for sure if enough people went in on it. I'd probably only be bringing Katana if I went, since the Girls aren't Nihon Ken, Conker hates everyone, Tyto will go if I can get him comfortable around strange people (in large groups).

Still waiting on the final word but I WANT to go. Looking into flights right now :)

  • Morning Everyone - here is the award sponsorship worksheet. The idea was thrown around interested clubs being able to sponsor each breed as a whole. I would like to try and make this a reality. After that we can open it up to individual sponsors. The group showing placements will be offered at a later date.

To give everyone an idea to how the show(s) work here is a break down for the awards.

First there are two shows. Each breed has the following classes Puppy, Junior, Senior, Adult, Breeder/Handler, and Champion and Grand Champion. Ribbons are given for 1st-4th places in each of these classes. Then all the 1st place males compete against each other for Best Male and Reserve Male. The same is done for females. After that they award the best of winners and finally the Best of breed. This is done for both the Regular and Altered classes.

After the classes have been judged they take all the Best of Breeds and they will go onto group showing. The Best of breeds will then be judged and placed into 1st-4th placements. This will be the final placements for the show.

So this is what sponsoring a breed will cover(all awards are for Regular and Altered classes).

    Best of Breed
    Best of Winners
    Best Male
    Best Female
    Reserve Male
    Reserve Female
    Grand Champion
    Champion
    1st-4th place ribbons per class.
Breed Sponsor Per Show =$100 Both shows for $180
If your club is interested please PM me here and I will sponsor in the order that I get them. I'll add you all to the list below.

Japanese Akita - JACA both shows
    Akita -
    Shiba -
    Shikoku - NASC both shows
    Hokkaido -
    Kai -

  • So right now we have the Japanese Akita trophies and Shikoku trophies covered. At this time if individuals, kennels, and businesses are interested in sponsoring awards we can now do that.

The cost to sponsor the whole breed(Reg & Altered classes) for one show is $100. If multiple people want to sponsor one that's cool. I need one person to handle the money. On the show program I'll make sure to have room to list all the names. DO ME A FAVOR AND NOT HAVE A LIKE 50 PEOPLE sponsor a class :) If both shows are sponsored it's $180.

If you are interested please PM me, I'll confirm and then post it here.

  • I have a silly question too... Or rather, is it really silly to enter a pet in an altered class? A dog and handler with no experience showing. I keep going back and forth between thinking it would be fun or pointless.

How many people are entering altered pets? Pets that are not typical show dogs. If we are all in the same boat together, it would make more sense!

Also, are there more details on the Saturday evening dinner? Is this open to the forum, or just organizers?

I was going to try and enter the girls in, but kimber will still have a mostly naked belly, and kona may be a little sensitive with judges (every once in a while there's a male human that she hates, and will growl at them...then after they ignore her and she checks them out she decides they're her best friend..). So, I will probably watch from the sidelines :P

I think it would be fun to take a shot at the ring, learn a few things ahead of time and go try! :)

  • You can attend without entering your dogs - but, if they're NK, why not enter! The more individuals of the breeds the judges can see and experience, the better.

Yes, you can enter your pet in altered, and no, its not silly.

  • agree with Claire. If it's anything like the NIPPO classic I attended, it's very beginner friendly. People who've done this before will guide you on how to show your dogs in the ring. It's fun and the more experience the judge gains (and more entrants) the more likely we can do this again in the future.

I wouldn't let the shaved belly stop you from entering. My friend had a male Malmaute that had to have a toy extracted from his intestinal tract. Very long shave line. He was still shown in UKC.

Both judges are women judges if it helps. I know the second judge, Lynn Martin, will be very good with the dogs.

Oh, that's awesome! Well then @zandrame, maybe i'll join you in the altered class if you wanna be beginners together! ;)

  • @mdokic, yes! That would be great! I'm glad I asked, haha. ;)
  • I also showed a dog with a shaved belly at a UKC show. It wasn't an issue.

I'm going to show my pet American Akita for the first time in altered at this show. :D

  • My offer still stands for anyone that wants to enter, but is nervous about showing, I would happily show them in their class for you. I will also pack and assortment of show collar and leashes for anyone that needs one to use that day. I will only have 1 dog with me to show, so I will be available.

  • You all should take Stacey up on her offer of coaching or handling. She is really good with teaching and has a relaxed way about her that makes you feel like you have no need to worry after all. :)

Super jealous- Wish I could join you!

I was really wanting to go to this, but... I'm not sure Meitou would do well. Having all those other dogs around might be tough for him. And....he has issues with people touching him. The judge wouldn't be able to get his/her hands on him without Meitou freaking out, pretty sure (another thing I'm trying to get help with from our reactivity trainer). He lets me look at his teeth, but I don't think he'd let anyone else do it. And we've had issues with his comfort level with having his testicles touched because of a vet (grr), so we are kind of back to square one on that.

So I don't know that I'll be going. I think it would make me feel worse than I already do.

Ah but how much does it cost to just get a TL? I just registered the girls AKC-FSS for a coursing trial event I signed up for on the 4th and 5th of Oct, so that's some money...hope it's not a bunch to get TLs :/

  • @mdokic, looks like TL is $20
    https://www.ukcdogs.com/DEWebCom.nsf/TL Web?OpenForm

And single reg with external registry pedigree is $35
    http://www.ukcdogs.com/Web.nsf/WebPages/Registration/StandardSingleReg

Are there any downsides to TL? Since it seems you can upgrade to full reg with points intact at any time. I think.
  • $20 for a TL and $35 for perm registration. All you need for the perm registration is a copy of the AKC registration and a copy of the pedigree. If you are not planning on doing a lot if ukc performance events, then all you need is a TL number. If you are planning on future ukc events, I would skip the TL and just get the perm registration.

Gothcha...i wouldnt think twice if i hadn't spent the registration costs and costs for 3 runs each for both girls for next weekend :P Lots of other expenses too with recent events outside of doggie world...i'll talk with nate, but $20 isn't bad per dog, things just kinda add up. :/ After next weekend, i think i'll stick with fun-runs for the dogs haha

  • The downside to getting a TL is that if you eventually decide to get full registration you have spent a total of $55 instead of just $35. That's it.

Does anyone know how long it normally takes to get a TL number, and when the deadline to register for the event is off the top of their head? (i thought i saw oct 25th on the poster)...

Pre-entry deadline is Oct. 25 (received by Oct. 25.) $20 for one show, $30 for two shows.

Day-of-show entry is $25 per show.

I believe that for all the breeds except JA, you can call the UKC for a TL number.

You can request a TL number online and they will email it to you. It comes back pretty quick. I have to remember to get my entry filled out and sent in. Everything is confirmed for Ritsu and I. We will arrive Friday afternoon and leave Monday.

  • Three things -

    1. We will not be issuing TL at the show. Please get your TL in advance.

    2. Blue Buffalo is going to have a booth at the show. Big thanks to Corina for getting this done.

    3. Pre-Entries are due oct 25th. They get mailed to the event secretary.

  • Entries as of today. Ideally I would like to have 25 dogs per show. Entries usually come in around the PE deadline. So I'm encouraged.

My kai entry is in the mail. I wish I could bring more than 1 with me, but the girls are out of coat and condition and kuma has his entire shoulder shaved.
