So it has come time to have our septic tank emptied. Noah was out there with Rakka and the lid to the septic tank was off... you might have guessed where this is going. Rakka fell half way in and got her back legs and underside covered in sludge. A few minutes later, I let her in, not knowing what had happened. Boy was I in for a surprise. She was soaking wet and smelt like a sewer. I don't know what Noah was thinking taking the dogs out with him to open the septic tank!

I can now tell you that washing raw sewage off a dog is most decidedly not fun.

We always keep Nature's Miracle Skunk Off and some disposable gloves around for those kinds of emergencies.  Our Malamutes just loved going after skunks and they didn't really mind getting skunked.  The stuff works on any bad odors on your dog:  just wipe on, leave for a few minutes and rinse off.  It's a solution of enzymes which break down the proteins etc that are making the bad smell. Poor you!

The good news is she hasn't retained any odour.  I'm actually quite surprised by this, because we only bathed her in water (no soap) and then she groomed herself and now she's back to being clean and odourless.  I'm quite impressed by my self-cleaning dog!

Mika cleans herself too. I wouldn't mind so much if her breath smelled good, but she has dog breath. Bleach. I know you can't smell it on her fur, but she does have that dog stink that I don't LOVE.     

So it's shampoo for our pups.

It was Noah's idea not to use soap, I wanted to and since I was making him do most of the hard work involved in bathing her I let him have his way.  It turned out okay in the end.  Although, she got wet today because it was raining and when wet, there is still some odour so I may soap-bath her myself... but maybe not.
