Tsukitsune you may want to trim off the dorsal fin first before feeding. Some fish have a sharp spike on the dorsal fin. Trout its not so bad but still there, perch it's real bad. Snf

We could never get our pups to eat whole fish... would have been so good for them! Cool pix - glad RAW is working well for you guys. :o)

Hehe. I love the innards falling out in the video. :-)

thanks, snf, i watched them very closely while they ate the fins, no issues and they chewed them b/c they didn't come back out whole :) I was actually told by the nutritionist that the fins contain some pretty good essential fatty acids so we were trying to keep them on unless we have issues with them. so far with the trout, sardine and mackerel there hasn't been issue, but if we do perch we will certainly keep that in mind! the innards are a blast... the other two pups eat in the crate so clean up isn't so bad but tsuki just can't seem to keep it in the bowl or on the mat!! ktrebor, i think it's iron and wine.. but i'm addicted to pandora.com (set up an iron and wine station and you'll discover some seriously great music!)

Not to hijack this thread.....I have just been informed that Canidae has changed it's formula. We found out outselves once our adopted dog started throwing the food back up. Long story short he throws up most brands. : ( Canidae was one he was able to eat with no problems. Sigh.... Anyway, I wonder how many brands have changed? I was looking a new bag of Orjens and noticed they have reduced the fish. I am going back out today to check to see what the options are. If anyone has any ideas outside of raw (sorry tsukitsune we won't be able to dedicate to fully raw) I would love to hear it. Snf

no worries, snf! i realize RAW isn't for everyone. Heck, if we take in fosters we'd have to give them kibble just for the finances of it all. but we just made the 100% switch because of all the formula changes, cutbacks and price jacking! the dog food industry is constantly going to changes and it just scares me that I wouldn't be able to control what my furfamily is consuming. Just in the last year, Eagle Pack Holistic fish formulas have increased grain and filler content while decreasing fish content. Canidae changed their formula but on their website it makes it seem like the changes were A-OK no big deal but all the people I know who feed it are seeing major changes in their dog's eating habits/stool/etc. Orijen is what we were going to feed but then saw the decrease in fish content so we went to Wellness Core but Tsuki had a hot spot flair up on it (cooked chicken issue I think)... its just an uncontrollable industry on the home level and I have no confidence in it anymore.

I think Canidae also switched Manufacturers to Diamond Foods (they arent very good). With all the changes im not sure what im gonna feed now either. I'm thinking 3-4 meals Raw and the rest kibble probably Orijen or TOTW for Harley and something with less protein for Zoie. I want to finish Dr. Pitcairn's book before i go all raw.

In contrast or comparison to Pitcairns methods, here is what I've compiled when I was researching: Raw Basics Resource Page
