I'm a couple chapters into _Dog Man: An Uncommon Life on a Faraway Mountain_ http://www.amazon.com/Dog-Man-Uncommon-Faraway-Mountain/dp/1594201242 It's pretty interesting...it's about a guy who lived in Akita during WWII and began breeding them immediately following the war. It's supposed to be a book about neither dogs nor Japan, but it does pretty well at being both, while also sharing the story of the man's wife, who had a very tough, Japanese type experience of life. Some very nice old black-and-white pictures of Akitas, and a generally interesting account of how that breed was developed - in particular how the modern standards were developed, which possibly extends to the other breeds.

Yes, it is an interesting perspective on relationships within the family and the differences in expectation, particularly care of dogs from one culture to another or even generational differences in rearing practices etc.
