She was dumped at the shelter because she had demodectic mange and her owners apparently couldn't be bothered to take her to the vet. This is what she looked like when we got her. She had scratched herself to the point of bleeding. She has been in a foster home getting her medicated baths and a lot of TLC and this is what she looks like now! She is really cute. :o) She looks so uncomfortable in that first pic. Thanx for posting this, I think its very helpful. Ahi actually had some type of mite - similar to mange [I can't remember the exact name] when she was like 8 months... We think she got sick from daycare and that caused the mite issue. We treated it with some type of meds and it cleared up pretty fast. Her coat is amazing now, like it never even happened. We take great care of our dogs, and Ahi was always at the vet since she got in so much trouble as a pup. I remember we were SO SHOCKED she had it - but its apparently freakishly common and very easy for a dog to get. Actually dogs already have it, its just if their immune system is good they fight off the mites - but once their immune system gets compromised the mites can get them. Anyway, good post! I agree - it's very treatable! As I said in another mange post, Sasha had a severe case of it when she was rescued and I would have had no idea other than her FM told me! Mange is not as serious (meaning fatalistic) as some may think. Its very common and needs serious treatment, but totally curable! ## TheWalrus · 2008-09-22T00:22:20.000Z A little kitten I rescued a couple months ago had a really bad case of some form of mites. It wasn't very noticable at first, and the vet missed it on the first check up. The worst part of it was that my wife turned out to be allergic to the mites, and broke out in a terrible rash over around 30% of her body. She had to take 3 weeks off work because she couldn't put shirts on. Needless to say, I didn't mind her walking around topless in the house for 3 weeks :P But yeah, like everyone is saying, not the end of the world/totally treatable.
