# Puppy feeding frequency

From what I've read and been told, at some point in time puppies will loose interest in their second of three meals during the day. At that point, you can switch from feeding them three times down to only twice.

I'm wondering at what age that starts to happen because I'm seeing that in Joey alread…

I'm wondering at what age that starts to happen because I'm seeing that in Joey already but I wasn't expecting it quite so soon. Is this too early? He's barely over 3 months.

we got tsuki at 3 months and she was already down to 2 meals a day for a week or so in rescue

Maybe he's loosing interest, but I think I would continue feeding him that second meal. His digestive system is still growing, I don't think it will be preferable than 3 meals a day. The bloat issue isn't a problem here, but still it's better for him no to get full 2 times a day, instead of filling his stomach less, for 3 times. And maybe he's just going through a phase.

Good luck with that, Dave!

3 - 4 months seems to be the norm for us too.

We feed most of our pups 2 times after around 4 - 5 months, and they are starting to lose interest in the second one now at around 7 - 8 months.

Our Akita lost interest fastest of all the breeds we have.

I noticed that Ryu did EVERYTHING really early. He potty-trained early, wanted to eat less early, took less potty breaks early... must be a Shiba thing :-) Around 5 months, Ryu lost interest in breakfast. He only wanted to eat in the afternoon and then early evening. Then he switched and like breakfast again but didn't want the afternoon meal. Now at 6 and a half months, he'll only eat the afternoon meal. I just combined the breakfast and afternoon portions into one and he eats that at 6:30 pm.... then he has a small meal a little bit before his last potty break at 9 pm. I'm sure he'll want to switch again back to eating breakfast when I'm home during the day.... but for now, he only gets 2 meals (same amount of food, just less mealtimes). Joey, at 3 months, seems a bit early to switch from 3 to 2 meals... but then again, nothing surprises me anymore...

Thanks guys!

Brad, I'm a bit surprised they don't have interest in a second meal. I'm pretty sure Lucy would eat five times a day if I let her. She is always excited when it's meal time and always licks the bowl clean (unless she's having problems).

You know, all our pups are rather finicky about food... they only eat till they are full then stop... except Kona and Loa, they love food and will eat till they pop.

Jake is down to once a day and then he only eats if he wants it.  I was concerned after his neuter that he would get fat and want to eat eat eat, but so far that is not the case.  Treats, however, is an all together different story.  I pass by the pantry and he stops to see if I will open it and give him a treat.  He loves those 'greenies' and always sits to get one.

Hehe. ...stop....pop. Nice Brad. :-) You're a poet and you don't even know it, (your feet show it, they're longfellows).
