I'm looking forward to the spam. :-) I think Brad has it right, just take things slow. There will be plenty of time for crazy play time later on, the first few days/weeks should be very low key with limited interaction. The more tired your dogs are before introducing the puppy the better. The day before and the day I picked up Joey, Lucy and I walked for a total of 10 hours. She was too tired to even pay much attention to Joey and that enabled me to have them sleeping next to each other within a few minutes. :-) ## sunyata · 2009-02-05T15:39:09.000Z Yay! I'm sure the dogs will get along fine as long as things are calm and controlled. If everything's under control and everyone's calm, there's no need for the pups to stress and they can focus on getting to know each other. ## tsukitsune (moderator) · 2009-02-05T16:16:54.000Z congrats for your grandma! and kudos, I"m not sure if I'd want to start a shiba from a pup when I'm that age! ## jikjak · 2009-02-05T16:29:55.000Z shes quite excited and is still thinking of a name. its too bad she has to wait a little longer. the shiba will be a handful at her age but she has a lot of hired help over there so she should be fine. i think shes going to be one spoiled shiba! it would have been nice to be able to bring the pup with me when i fly out there this month. i have a deposit with katja for a shikoku. im waiting for a black sesame female. something different from my red shiba girl. i love the wolfish/coyote colors that i see on some shikokus. btw ive noticed in shikoku pics that some of them have a shorter nose and more of a stop. is there any way to tell how the pup's face will turn out? i prefer the shorter noses with a bit more of a prominent stop. maybe its just the camera angle though! hehe anyways ill take it slow with the intros. im more worried about my shiba girl than my male akita, hes super friendly and gentle. the shiba is the one with the attitude! ## JessicaRabbit (admin) · 2009-02-05T17:35:49.000Z The shorter nose and prominent stop is less than ideal against breed standard (as I understand it). But to your question it is very hard to tell. Emi, my shiba, didnt seem to like the new puppy too much. she almost bit her in the face! good thing i was quick enough to prevent a full on bite. it was strange they seemed ok and were sniffing each other nose to nose and then she went for the bite. other than that emipretty much ignored the puppy for the rest of the night and she does not seem to want to be around her. oh shes mad at me too! total attitude! she went out to go do her duty in the backyard and when she came in she ran towards me excitedly, spotted the puppy then pulled a 180 and stormed off the other way. i think her nose was even held up high! this is going to definitely take more time. shes got quite the attitude. max, my akita, was great. super friendly and just wants to play. i think hes still too big to play with the pup (shes about the size of his head) and shes a bit scared of him still. will work on that more tomorrow. the pup (still nameless) is a bit feisty too and while scared of Emi at first, she now just ignores her. looks like im going to be dealing with a couple of divas! hehe anyways as promised, here's some spam! ## Sangmort (moderator) · 2009-02-07T06:45:06.000Z OMG!!!! They will all sort themselves out eventually, though. :) ## lindsayt · 2009-02-07T19:43:10.000Z What a pretty girl and such thick baby ears. ## jikjak · 2009-02-09T17:59:39.000Z well so far the introduction with emi and the pup is not going so well. they do not get along. sometimes it seems things are fine but then emi seems to get mad all of a sudden and tries to bite her. i dont think shes going for the kill but im not willing to find out. shes still much bigger than the pup and could hurt her badly. ive never had a problem like this when introducing a new dog. makes me worry later on as well when i have to introduce a shikoku pup. hopefully its just a matter of time before they get used to each other. would an adult shiba actually hurt or kill a pup? max gets a long just fine with the pup. hes very gentle and careful around her and i could leave them along with each other with no problems. ## lindsayt · 2009-02-09T18:25:45.000Z Yes they can kill a pup (as in are capable of it). Adult shibas can maim pups severely, usually it's warnings/corrections, but a warning for a baby can cause a lot of damage so why risk it. You must supervise them or keep the pup ex-penned so that your older dog can't get ticked off by her. When you see your older dog focusing/targeting on the pup, you should already be in the process of removing the older dog to a seperate area. Some Shibas are puppy crazy, love pups and little things and many have zero tolerance for scene stealing or puppy exuberance. It's not uncommon for dams to target their daughters and sires to fight with their sons once they reach a certain age, so that may have something to do with it even though they are not related that way.
