Quite a few people got fired / quit this week...so I got stuck with a lovely 9-hour shift today. [ 8 hours the day before, & 7 hours tomorrow...joy. ] I just wish the Shiba Rescue in FL would call me back! When I was transferring from Illinois to California, our 7 man team in the photo lab went down to 2 in a week hahahaha. But that's a good 5 or 6 hours from here. So when I get rich maybe I'll start one ;) There are tons of rescue shelters for all dogs out in my area though, many of them disturbingly full... I stopped by one last week which had a small store on my search for an alternative food for Mylie. I probably spent an hour playing with all the dogs, hoping I had a home to bring them all to! While wandering around town today, much to my surprise I came across a Shikoku, he was a beautiful 10 year old black sesame. I work with a professor that is waiting for a shikoku from iKon kennels and I'm pretty sure she lives her summers near where you are. tell you what, between me and you, whoever starts the sanctuary first - the other will be the built in 2nd pair of hands. :) ## LoveMyMylie · 2008-08-31T02:14:19.000Z His name was Yoshi, and they talked a lot about his temperament which sounded typical of a Shikoku. It sounded as though he had been a huge frustration at first although worth the hard work. Being such an old age now, he was very laid back, very collected, and accepting of strangers. We compared the Shiba to the Shikoku a bit, they absolutely adore him; adopted him at a year old in Maine after his owners surrendered him. I asked if I could take him home... Couldn't talk them into it.... :p I've actually seriously considered opening a shelter/training facility for both dogs and owners/day care. I've looked into getting non profit organization funding and such. A lot of hoarding situations start off as a rescue that gets out of hand. People start dropping off animals even though you don't have room for them, animals are coming in faster than they go out, funding quickly disappears, etc. ## Leonberger (admin) · 2008-08-31T11:10:15.000Z The most hours I worked straight was around 50. The economy is making people lay off, not hire. ## _dlroberts · 2008-08-31T14:27:46.000Z When I get really busy which happens 3-5 times a year there are weeks at a time where I'm either awake/working or sleeping and nothing else. During those times its not uncommon for me to work 110+ hour weeks. Of course now that I've got the dogs I can't go quite as crazy since they rely on me for things like, ya know, food and potty breaks. ;-) The benefit of my job though is after those work binges I can take as much time as I want off (which I usually do). ## MommyofNiko · 2008-08-31T15:07:58.000Z I do have a very flexible schedule though...and get to work from home once a week...but still...on call sux and im not getting paid a dr salary! ## Leonberger (admin) · 2008-09-10T17:46:39.000Z I've just reached my 36th hour straight of work, 38th awake. Still the final stretch to go... No work for me tomorrow, unless the world is coming to an end. Came home last night at 21:30 and crashed on the sofa by 22:30. I don't remember how I got to bed. Nat says I walked to bed, I believe it because I think she'd have a hard time picking me up :-P Haven't had one of these in a while, they do drain a lot out of us. Some days it's cool, others it gets really hard to handle. But when you have a deadline and things are a bit behind, you have to push it a bit. To add to that, I spent a large part of the night trying to get an editing machine to do something correctly only to find after failing a few times that that particular function has a bug that hasn't been fixed yet. He normally doesn't do it because I tell him to back off, but yesterday he wasn't caring much about that.
