# Arthritis Supplements?

Does anyone know good supplements for arthritis?  Our dear old Loki is starting to show his age.

We just started Niko on some for her luxating patella to try and avoid arthritis.

I don't know for dogs, but I know for humans Chrondroitin is supposed to help a lot.  I think i've seen some supplements in petsmart that say there is chrondroitin in them.  Im not very sure though, so don't mark my words.  But it may be something to look into.

I just started Lucy on Osteo Biflex which is glucosamine and chondroitin. I got the "double strength" and she gets half a pill, once a day, for a loading phase. After a month, she'll get a quarter of a pill once a day. I picked it over dog specific supplements since most of them have liver in them and Lucy can't have it. The dog specific glucosamine supplement that was recommended to me by Joey's breeder is "missing link".

There are a lot of supplements out there.  Trader Joe's has their own doggy one that Nemo is currently on because I haven't ordered any Arthogen.  SynoviG3 is really good too, you can spend as much or as little as you like.

www.petvetdirect.com has great prices on many suppliments and other dog products.

We used to give our Malamute, Diva 'Move Free' made by Schiff from Costco.  It is a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin.  The studies have shown that it is the combination which works the best. Diva had an injury as a pup to her hind leg and as she aged it came back to haunt her.  She couldn't jump into the back of the Jeep.  After she was on Move Free for a while, everything was fine.  One word of caution, we ran out of Move Free and decided to try a generic brand and it didn't work.  So not every brand of nutraceutical is the same.

I know Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are supposed to decrease inflammation in the joints and the rest of the body, and they are good for the dog's skin and coat.  I give 3V caps to all of my dogs daily, here's the link, your veterinarian probably carries them too or can order them:

SynoviG3 is a good quality supplement that Brandon mentioned.  You can get that from the above website as well, DVM Pharmaceuticals is the name of the company.

Thanks for the tips!  Loki hasn't been on any supplements so far... the signs of arthritis seemed to sneak up on us overnight.  Of course, I haven't been to the vet yet but I have an appointment for Thursday (for another reason as well).  So far it seems that glucosamine and chondroitin are the things to look for (based on what I've been reading and what you guys have said).
