# Our First "Diva Fit" Tosca goes out at around 11pm. She had come in from an afternoon on our deck at about 5pm, so I really was just trying to ignore her as I was watching TV; she was being annoying, but not overly insistent. She had come in from an afternoon on our deck at about 5pm, so I really was just trying to ignore her as I was watching TV; she was being annoying, but not overly insistent. At about 10pm I went downstairs to find... Vengeance Pee. She peed in the middle of my living room rug, not by the kitchen door on the linoleum or anything, and she was sitting on her sofa looking very proud. I mixed up my pet accident (or Vengeance Pee) remedy I learned somewhere. (1 part water, 1 part white vinegar, 1 tsp. dish soap. Don't know if it really works, but I've never had a repeat piddler. Never had a Vengeance Piddler either though.) I kept her away from the cleaning process and was grumbling at her. Clearly this was deemed highly inappropriate because she went upstairs with an audible "humph." She checked in on me, but I was annoyed and she decided to make herself scarce. Later, we went for a walk on which she did nothing but be a nuisance and I'd had enough of her nonsense - barking, albeit softly, at nothing, ect... so we headed back to the house. She was lagging behind and really didn't want to go in. The angrier I got, the more she protested. I ended up leaving her on her tie-out (after putting on a ludicrous amount of outdoor lights) and I went inside to find and download a decent recording of "Santa Lucia" for my Christmas iTunes album. I figured I'd give her an hour to get nice and tired so she'd go to sleep when she came in. After about 45 mins. "Ahwoooo!" - a shiba howl - and then another followed by some barks. I got upstairs and was met by my father, who had been in bed. Tosca went right past me and down the stairs where she began barking at me to play with her. I wanted none of it and so she curled up on her sofa with her back to me and I was at my computer with my back to her. I found the song I had been looking for and began to sing along and she came over to me. I picked her up and held her as I sang to her. She seemed to enjoy it. We might be friends again. I'm not sure. After the music stopped, she went back to her sofa and put her back to me again. And after all I did for her today! Ah, life with a diva shiba. ## _dlroberts · 2008-11-18T03:30:26.000Z LOL. I think you're learning that "appreciative" is not a word that will ever describe a Shiba. Generally speaking, its their way or no way at all. I get the back treatment from Lucy on a daily basis, usually for something as minor as making her wait an extra few seconds before releasing her to eat a meal. Sometimes I will be laying on the couch and he will jump up and snuggle me which is amazing and wonderful, but when he is done he is done. He never jumps on the couch to cuddle me when I ask him to :P ## StaticNfuzz · 2008-11-18T11:45:40.000Z Hummmm......ok I am looking at this from another perspective. It is best not to look on it as “vengeance” or spitefulness and clear your mind of the anthropomorphism. Own up, it makes training much more simple. Bottom line the dog had to go and you missed the cue. As doggie parents often we are distracted with electronics, computer t.v. etc and we are not exactly on target with what the dog needs or wants. I raise my hand….Guilty of this too. : ( I wouldn't be angry with her since I think there was a miscommunication. (Far too often the case between humans and dogs.) From the behavior you describe it sounds like she really did not want to pee on your rug. If a Shiba is being overly annoying or cuddly etc, time to take note there something going on. ….. Usually it is for a reason…. think Maslow’s hierarchy of needs first. It could be Tosca had some extra water from coming in from being in the sun etc and had to pee on an earlier schedule and was subtly trying to let you know. Not every Shiba dances at the door in every case or all the time. Sometimes it is really subtle, way too subtle. It also could be Tosca reverted back to previous schedule temporarily. New patterns are hard to adjust to and sometime the dogs revert back a bit when in a new environment. Humans are not exactly on schedule either at the exact hr but usually have the privilege of pottying at their leisure. If you need to do other things and can’t get to her request, I would keep her in a blocked off area. No different than I would for a puppy or immature dog until you learn more about her needs. I do think she is too cute!! : ) So glad you warmed up and I am sure she is glad too. Snf ## mike_t · 2008-11-18T11:59:08.000Z That's too funny!! Sounds like quite the little diva you've got there. I think as of this morning, the honeymoon stage was officially over for Remy. Seems he's realized that he has to work for everything and actually do what I say (not ask) from now on and he's not happy about it. He gives me this look of disgust when he finally does sit when going out or coming in and I got the silent treatment after whiping his paws off last night. I got up at the ungodly hour of 5:45 this morning to take him out around the block before work and he didn't want any of it. He was giving me this "what the hell are you getting me out of bed for" look which was also followed by the look away, the back and then when I did put the leash on him, he flopped over on his side and got dragged across the hardwood. He only got to avoid tumbling down the stairs. Welcome to the rest of my life I guess...glad I'm in good company....lol ## _dlroberts · 2008-11-18T12:06:20.000Z I'm not sure why, but I get a huge smile on my face when I read about Shiba drama. That is so typical of the "I don't wanna" and "I am not gonna". Even when the get older and you have a senior Shiba you will see it from time to time. Tosca appearently feels that nothing good can happen on a rainy day and trys to sleep through them. ## mike_t · 2008-11-18T13:46:09.000Z Remy does the same thing in the rain...it rained the first 36 hrs he was home and I'd drag him out the door and he'd just stand there looking miserable. The only way he'd finally pee is if I held the umbrella over him. What a frickin princess...lol I gather it's a shiba trait, but I'm quickly finding out that Remy is pretty dramatic. As for the dragging, picture this but with a 'different' look on his face... Even though it was bloody early and I was grumpy, how can that not put a smile on your face...I love this dog!! ## KFontaine04 · 2008-11-18T13:50:19.000Z Awww. Mike you and Remy are so cute. Im glad you found such a wonderful companion. Miso HATES the rain, won't go out in it, won't even go out if the ground is wet, even if the rain stopped. If I make him go out he gives me the tormented look and holds his paw up at me like "aw mom it's all wet!" He is such a pansy about it. Sake will stand out in the rain for hours.
