So I made the nutty day trip out to Yamanashi for the Kai-ken Aigokai National Tenrankai (exhibition I guess). I managed to make it for the last half seeing as I had a prior engagement to help set up some stuff for the local rescue. Was overcast, but still clear enough to get a good view of Mount Fuji, and we even got a little bit of sun toward the end of the afternoon. I've never been surrounded by so many Kai, it was like being in the twilight zone or something. There were so many different types/colors/sizes. I didn't get many pics as I was busy on the video camera, and I apologize in advance for the lame state of my equipment (and my camera skills lol!) It's 1 am at the moment, so I'll just throw up a few pics and post more in this thread later :P

wooow, I really love the 2nd one, not sure why, but those orange-y Kai Ken always caught my attention. :0 They're so striking.

AWESOME!!!!!!! Those 3 Kai pics are amazing. Really good looking Kai. I'm so envious! I'm looking forward to the video. :o) Thanx for the post! Where any of these Kai from "working" lines? ----

## _dlroberts · 2008-10-27T14:15:09.000Z
I'm eagerly anticipating more too. I'm glad you decided to make the trip. ;-)

## brandon_w (admin) · 2008-10-27T14:27:31.000Z
That Kai in the second pick is noe of the coolest looking dogs ever. The Brindle Kai and Hokkaido are really something else.

## Nekopan · 2008-10-27T14:32:32.000Z
Now THAT'S an aka-tora. Really does look like tiger stripes. :)

Shigeru: Wow! Thanks for the pics --- can't wait to see more! I love them all (but have to admit I like #3 the most because of the resemblance to Josephine)...

## AkiraleShiba · 2008-10-27T19:46:37.000Z
Wow ... I can't wait for the other pictures ...

I'm really happy that I made the effort to go this year. It was definitely an experience worth having. Brad: Most of the dogs were show dogs, but one of the reasons I LOVED the dog in the second pic is because he is a working dog. The dog in the first pic is from the same bloodline and was actually a very stunning dog as well, but the lighting was terrible and my camera didn't really help. The main Kai working dog preservation society (or the most famous) the Kaiken Genyukai brought some dogs, but they were from their show lines. They had some pups there that were from their hunting lines, and I got some video of them. It was interesting being around so many Kai, you can really get a feel for the breed when there's so many of them around to look at. There was maybe 1 or 2 out of over 100 dogs that were really 'friendly' in the Labrador kind of way. With the other 98% of the dogs it was walk-up-sniff-you-once and then no more interest. A slightly funny sight was seeing the juvenile female bitch winner a couple hours after her win. She didn't look like half the dog I had seen earlier. I have video of her in the ring, and from the moment she stepped I she looked like a winner. After the show though, she was with the husband of her 'person' and I remarked that she looked tired as I tried to take some pictures. The husband laughed and said, 'She's no good with me!' and called mom over. The moment walked up she was a totally different dog, just lit up and totally focused on her. There was a lot of snarling in the ring, to be expected when you have 20plus intact male Kai in a confined area. I'd say around 20% of the males looked like they couldn't be around other males, ever. About 50% were antsy till they could greet the other dog and get a sniff, and the last 30% were just interested in playing. There was one stunning Kuro-tora male owned by some people I've chatted with before on an SNS, and he was in the ring for the last comp of the day where they judge previous winners and pick an overall champ. He was soooo chill and laid back. The dog next to him was snarling and all, but he just sort of gave him a look for a few seconds, a little growl, and then turned around to face the other way. Most everyone watching loved him, but he lost, as apparently the judges didn't like the laid back attitude and said he lacked aggressiveness. Overall, an awesome day with a picturesque snow covered Mount Fuji in the background, beside a beautiful river in Yamanashi. I'll try and capture all the video on my day off which should be tomorrow.

Wonderful pictures. Thnx so much for sharing.

## asia · 2008-10-27T22:06:48.000Z
Wow - wonderful! Thank you!

## brada1878 (admin) · 2008-10-27T23:20:06.000Z
COOL! Thanx for the pics, again. I'm pretty surprised the judge discounted that dog for not having aggressiveness, Kai are supposed to be the only Nihonken that is not innately dog aggressive. What's up with that? Do I have bad info on the breed? I can't wait to check out the videos! Thanx so much for posting this, I so wish I could have been there! ----

Kai really are one person dogs huh? :) Just SO amazing! The photos came out really good Shigeru! I thank you for all the spammage :D ~

## Romi (admin) · 2008-10-28T00:06:29.000Z
That is kind of interesting Brad... I remember you talking about that a couple months ago. I would be interested to knowing that information as well.

## StaticNfuzz · 2008-10-28T00:18:48.000Z
Thanks for sharing ....it is always interesting to see the differences and perceptions in regard to the judges.

Brad from what I am told the Japanese judges like to see “attitude” in a dog. It may be a cultural thing though. For example when they come to America to judge Shibas they have concerns about the nature of the dogs since they don’t generally see dogs that “snark” at each other in the ring. Top breeders in the U.S. have worked on getting friendly temperaments. It is a bone of contention since the Japanese judges want to see distinct “shibatude” outwardly expressed by the dog. So I image it is the same with all of Nihon ken.

Snf

## TheWalrus · 2008-10-28T09:43:57.000Z
Yeah, what SNF said. The judges here are into the temperament of the Nihonken, as in they should be one person dogs, rather aloof and have 'attitude'. A lot of times it just translates into breeders being proud of their dogs for showing aggression toward other dogs. I'm not particularly fond of it because I feel that it's being emphasized too much in the Nihonken preservation societies. I think one reason for the trend is the infiltration of many of them by Yakuza/Right wing ultra-nationalist types. Breeding Nihonken is a sort of status symbol for them. I think there was a post a while back about the troubles the Akita preservation society has been having at their shows. There were quite a few unsavory types at the Kai exhibition as well, with one of the judges actually looking a bit shady as well. I took a short video of his bus, which basically looked exactly like the black ones the ultra-nationalists drive around here in Japan blaring propaganda, except he had Kaiken Aigokai stuff painted all over the side :P I was very disappointed the male dog I liked lost, but I got a reply to a condolence post I made on the SNS. The owner said after talking with the judges, they said the final straw was that the dog was too big. I'll admit he was pretty hefty at around 22-23 kg apparently.

Thread Jack real quick! Shigeru where in Japan do you live? My father was born in Osaka and I am trying to plan a trip back there in 2009.

## TheWalrus · 2008-10-28T10:02:09.000Z
I live in Chiba, about 45mins from Tokyo.

## Sangmort (moderator) · 2008-10-28T16:57:18.000Z
Awwww. I was thinking when it came time to get my Kai that I would import him from Japan :( The temperament thing kind of makes me think twice :o ~

## TheWalrus · 2008-10-29T12:51:41.000Z
Had enough time to capture the video, just haven't gotten through editing/converting all of it. Just ran a test run to see if the settings were decent and thought I'd post it (I probably won't get around to actually posting the rest for a few days!).

## _dlroberts · 2008-10-29T13:36:13.000Z
Ooooh, now I'm super psyched for end result!

## brada1878 (admin) · 2008-10-29T14:26:04.000Z
WOW! Great job! I was not expecting such a polished product. lol I thought it would be all rough like my videos. :o) The little puppy in the beginning is cute! The Kai that was whining was really handsome, and when it got to that part Kona barked at him. Jen turned to him and said "yea, that's annoying huh? That's what you sound like all the time Kona." <- LOL Great job! I'm with Dave, I can't wait for the rest!!! ----

## Leonberger (admin) · 2008-10-29T14:59:59.000Z
That's a nice job on the video Shigeru! I'll third the "I want to see more" motion!

## baanton · 2008-10-29T23:59:07.000Z
Shigeru: Thanks for the "teaser" video, and can't wait to see the rest! I love the Kai pup at the beginning -- how adorable is that!?! And how great that Mt. Fuji was showing up ---- I hear its usually in the clouds!

## Sangmort (moderator) · 2008-10-30T00:36:09.000Z
Bev hit the nail on the head, it was a "teaser!" Mt.Fuji = Awesome. Hopefully one day I'll get to see it with my own eyes :) The pup was great! Make me almost want to get a Kai first ;p Why was the other handsome man whining? He made me feel so bad :( I want to give him a hug lol ~
