I love to cook - like, really love to cook. I find it especially cathartic when I'm a bit depressed. I've reached a point where my dinners are far too involved and pricy for everyday dining and if I keep baking things for myself and my family, we'll all be 500 lbs. What's a gourmet to do? Answer: bake treats for her dog. I bought an organic dog treat cookbook and today I tried my first recipe from it - Carob Chip Cookies since I've found that Tosca will follow me to the ends of the earth and do pretty much whatever I ask of her for a carob chip. The biscuits look and smell wonderful and I got 100 shiba-sized treats from one batch of dough that was super easy to make. I can't believe after three weeks with a shiba I'm now a crazy dog lady who makes homemade biscuits.

I know what you mean - I have a bunch of treat recipes as well. I used to cook more, but I've scaled back as the kids are not as appreciative of some of the meals.

Lol don't worry we're all crazy animal lovers around here.

If there's one breed out there to turn us into both animal lovers & insane people, it's the shiba. I have been a dog owner my entire life, and have drastically changed training and feeding techniques for the better since owning a shiba. She drives me insane every single day but I couldn't imagine my life without her. Funny how that works. ps~have any good grain free recipes?

yes, (hangs head), welcome to the club. Only a devoted dog lover would stand over a 5 lb hunk of raw cow stomach in pouring rain, hacking at it and putting it into little baggies. Only a devoted dog lover would buy an organic dog treat book and slave away over the stove for her dog. And only a shiba owner would come on here and admit it!! :)

There's a reason its popular to say that "you don't own a Shiba, they own you." Sounds like Tosca hit the jackpot when she took ownership of you. :-)

Sadly, I think my dog would leave me if I tried to cook for it... My family always asks what I am buying for the holidays. It goes something like this: my sister, "we thought you could buy the turkey, and then mom and I would take care of the rest while you play with the kids". However, you all make it sound so fun!

Aww Amber you could come over and we could bake some cookies or something! It'll be fun :D

Thanks Rina! Though you may want to purchase a few more of those detectors first, just to be safe ;-)

The recipes are all wheat, corn, and soy free. There are also a few recipes for dogs with specific dietary needs beyond that. It was probably a good idea to get the book because the yield is so high for small treats that it sure beats buying snacks and they really don't take long at all... and the house smells nice afterwards, like freshly baked cookies.
