For Tsuki and Kitsune, this is not the first time they've moved, they've adjusted as well as to be expected. But Hachi - another story. She seems to have regressed in the housebreaking department. She is peeing a great deal on the carpet. We are concerned because we crated her while we did some shopping Saturday and she messed in her crate, even though we walked them right before we left. She has a vet appointment for Thursday to see if there is any medical reason (she was just spayed almost a month ago) for it. But in the meantime, does anyone have any good suggestions on re-housebreaking an adult dog? We've gone through this before, but Hachi is just not responding to the methods we use with adult dogs learning to be housebroken again even though we are treating her like a pup and making sure she has ample opportunity while removing the source (water bowl) right before bed, she still has accidents. ## Taaars · 2008-09-08T18:15:21.000Z Hmmm, I have almost the same issue with Sol; Wife and I went to Peru this past July while a friend stayed and watched over Sol and Luna while we were away. I think Sol was a tad upset and decided to pee on the rug while we were gone, I am guessing our friend did not notice it . Well, when we got back my wife told me that Sol took a pee right in front of her on the rug. I noticed that even after cleaning it he still was going back and Peeing there at night. My guess is that it has been saturated with his oder for some time and now he just feels thats a pee spot. I have taken the rug out and had it professionally cleaned and left it out of the living room for about 2 weeks, When I put it back Sol has not peed there again. You might want to get some order remover and have the area he has chosen completly cleaned, then if you can put a new cheap area rug on top of the zone, so that it keeps him of it for a while, this should stop him from going there; and if you see him sniffing at the area quickly take him for his outdoor pee, to re- educate him where you prefer him to go. ## Romi (admin) · 2008-09-08T20:56:00.000Z Jen, I really just think that Hachi doesn't cope well with new things. I think the soiling could be out of possible anxiety or fear. It will take time for her to get comfortable in her new environment. I'm sure with time, she will come around and be fine. I also agree that you should thoroughly clean and use lots of scent to get her scent out of the carpet. But other than that, I think you are doing the right things. Just treat her as a pup and give her lots of praise when she potties in the correct place and take her out more frequently than usual. ## sujewel · 2008-09-09T10:59:46.000Z Some animals just don't cope well with change, as Romi pointed out. Out youngest cat, Brittney did not wander around the house for the two years of moving here. Not only that, it took her a full 2.5 years to get used to my husband. Which is strange, since it only took her 2 years to get used to the dogs. And it is only in the last year that she's started to wander around the house....we've been here 4 years now. For Brittney, our bedroom was her 'crate'. It was safe and she knew everything in the bedroom...every smell, every item and where it all was placed. She had an issue with her eye as a kitty and has some blurred vision as a result. She worked it out on her own and has really become a great, social kitty - not just a mama's girl. Now, she's jumping on the counters, visiting us on couch, walking around with the dogs - drinking their water and eating their food. It's really awesome. We did try to prod her out of the bedroom a bit, but not much. I praised her when she was out. Obviously, it's different with an anxious dog. You can't just let Hachi work it out. But my point, albeit long, is that change is tough for many pets (and people too) and with time and patience, things could get better. I would go with Romi's suggestion. Train him like a pup. ## tsukitsune (moderator) · 2008-09-09T12:18:46.000Z I'm positive that the move is the sole factor in her accidents, she had just started to get into a good housebroken habit at the old place - being an outdoor dog for 2+ years, this was a hard habit to break... and we clean each spot with an industrial strength cleaner and wet vac we got for rental security return assurance (love craigslist!) but she still goes. Last night I took the water up, and this morning there was no spot. I hesitate to get into that habit because its all three dogs not getting water to rectify one's issue.
