We have 80+ people with paid RSVPs. A few less people than last year, but that's ok. Donations are also down a little, maybe off by one or two companies, but we got some new companies this year. I think the economy has hurt a lot of the small local businesses that donated over the last couple years. Especially the restaurants, I don't think they have the spare cash for as many donations with food prices being up. The weather is going to be nice, 83 and sunny. Maybe a bit warm for the dog but the shelter area has tons of nice trees and shade. We also bring a kiddy pool for throwing your Shiba into if you feel like it. It's almost 90º still, and we don't air condition the room that the computers are in. I'm getting a good workout while sitting here. This is Kido, he is 15 and retired. Retired from what you ask? Retired from doing anything he doesn't feel like doing. He lost both of his eyes to glaucoma. This is Levi and his Dad. Levi loves being held like that. His Dad just taps twice on his chest and Levi hops right up into his arms. I'll edit and upload more as the week progresses. He must be loving his retirement. :-) With all the great shots you're taking of other dogs, we haven't seen many of Nemo lately. Where was he during all this? ## brandon_w (admin) · 2008-09-02T15:20:50.000Z Kido is the man. I love that dog. A couple years ago before he lost his sight he would come to the dog park fairly often. Total old man alpha, if a young pup got up in his face he'd let out this growl/bark and they would all just back off. He would also push other dogs out of the way so that he could be pet. This is where Nemo spent most of the picnic: Due to Nemo's attitude he was in his crate a lot. Both Jennifer and I keep very busy at the picnic and can't always be with him. He did get to spend a good amount of time with my parents, where he was out of his crate but anchored to it. Taking him a around near all of the other dogs takes some skill, handling and most of your attention, which I can't do while I'm meeting and greeting, running the raffle, taking pictures, picking up the food, etc. ## _dlroberts · 2008-09-02T15:32:04.000Z Hi Nemo! Its funny you mention the attention it takes to manage Nemo around other people. I was just realizing this yesterday during the BBQ I hosted. There were four dogs here and about 10 people. There were a few times where I was in conversation across the room and was able to preempt a food grab attempt by one of the visiting dogs. Afterwards, I reflected on how in the last year I've learned to multi-task with my dogs. To be able to keep an eye on them while doing something else that requires my concentration. Of course I'm limited to some degree. When I'm talking to someone and Joey starts doing is crazy leash happy dance I have to stop the conversation to focus on him. So I feel your pain. Anyway, I didn't realize how involved you were with the picinic. Nice job! It looks like you had perfect weather and things went great. :-) ## brandon_w (admin) · 2008-09-02T19:42:50.000Z The picnic is run by Jennifer (my wife), my friends Melissa, MJ, and Me. I work with the humane society and print up all of the solicitation for donation letters and mail those out. Send out the e-mails, order the food, blah, blah, blah. We will be able to donate $700 to the Dane County Humane Society and $700 to the Shiba Inu Rescue Resource of America. A pretty succesful day I think. It seems there was a lot of shibas and that they had lots of fun (apart the poor Nemo who was in his crate because of being certainly too macho if I understood correctly). Congratulations to Kido, 15 years old is an honorable age and it fairly deserve to be "retired". Levi seems to have a nice sesame color. LJ I don't have an exact number on Shibas, I would guess 40-50. I only have a few action shots because it was pretty hot out last Saturday. Shelter #5 is the most popular one at the park so it's hard to get. I got the last Saturday available for the summer.
