# Figuring out my new lens

I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.... I need to work on my composition a bit, but I'm much happier than last time with the results. :-)

That just made my day Dave. I know nothing about lenses or cameras but I do know that I LOVE LOVE LOVE LUCY AND JOEY SPAM!

Beautiful Lucy and handsome Joey! Remind me again... which lens is this?

## Kaddy · 2009-02-02T19:06:25.000Z
I love curled up Shibas :oD They always remind me of the firefox logo hehe

Looks good! That lens is pretty sharp!

## Romi (admin) · 2009-02-02T20:25:48.000Z
Those are awesome Dave!!!

I think you got it! The lens appears to be very nice and sharp [as Rui said] - maybe I missed it, but what lens is it? I think the pics are nice, but I like #1, #8, and #11 the best. In #11 [the last one] you did a good job of focusing on his eyes, so they really pop. I also like how his left ear is slightly out of focus... shows really nice DOF [imo]. So, I think, "compositionaly", you did well! :o) ----

I love it when shibas try to make themselves disappear into the tiniest ball possible. Lucy has such a pretty face.

Hey Dave, Beautiful pictures of your pups! Thanks for sharing! I wish I was more adept at photography, but I can see you are very lucky to have two beautiful models to aim your camera at!

LOL Bev. Lucy and Joey have totally rejuvenated my photography hobby! (Well, that and having some more appropriate gear). The lens is the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8. These were taken in aperture priority at f/2.8 with a flash. I, like Brad did in some of the pics he took recently, fat fingered the ISO setting so they were all taken at ISO 1600. I did some noise reduction in post processing so they aren't quite as sharp as they could be. That and stopping down 2/3 with this lens supposedly produces even sharper results. I was really trying to play with DOF in these. Thanks everybody!!!!

The first pic is definitely my favorite! :) I've noticed with lenses that have a very wide aperture tend to be sharper when stopped down, but then I think the average "sweetspot" is between f4-f6...? ~

AWESOME pix! The sixth picture is my fave.

## Leonberger (admin) · 2009-02-03T09:03:30.000Z
Osy - Pretty much every lens is sharper when stopped down one or two stops. So normally that gives the sweet spot anywhere between f4 and f8. f5.6 and f8 are normally the sharper apertures for the vast majority of lenses. Anything smaller than that starts loosing sharpness and then diffraction starts affecting everything (depending on the lens, that might starts at around f16) f2.8 (and smaller) comes in very handy in low light, but it's always a compromise with the sharpest the lens can be. Of course some lenses "not so sharp" f2.8 is sharper that any other thing on Earth at f5.6 :-)

Nice pictures Dave. I like the in focus nose/out of focus eyes one of Joey. Very nice DOF with the lens.

## _dlroberts · 2009-02-03T20:03:00.000Z
Be careful guys, I may have set some traps to guard against Lucy's theft. ;-) @Brandon: I was thinking of you when I posted the pic of Joey with his nose in focus. You've posted a number of similar shots that I've been impressed with.

## Calia · 2009-02-03T20:14:04.000Z
