As most of you know I'm due to get my puppy on October 2nd, but I had a question for training methods. I've read that some of you use obedience classes, private trainers, clicking method. Have any of you tried the Command Performance method by David Dikeman on a Shiba Inu? I had great experiences training my Rottweilers on this method years ago and still have the tapes. However, I'm curious to see what other owners think of the method. Amazon link is below if a picture will jog people's memory about the training system. I never heard of this method either. As a puppy - I think socialization is more important than training. Obedience classes are great because you get to train your dog as well as letting the puppy get socialized at the same time. Obedience classes really help to get the puppy to focus on you as well with all the distractions and other dogs around. I guess it really depends on the extent of training you want to go. I am fine with Sit, Down, Stay, and Come. So..I only took the beginner obedience class and then started doing my own attentive training in public.

I agree. I know a lot of people who have taken classes at petco / petsmart / etc. & though they say the training wasn't all that great the main reason they did it was to ensure their pup got to meet different types of dogs & people.~

I've never heard of this method either, can you explain it? I agree that socialization trumps all other training very early on for a pup. Its a confidence builder and incredible practice for what they will inevitably face their whole lives. All of the issues - and I mean all of the issues! - i have worked with in shibas specifically are due to poor socialization to one thing or another in their formative year. Second to that, I think any training method that has a positive reinforcement basis works with shibas. Like Romi, I'm completely content with the sit, down, stay and [occasional] come, so beyond that I let the dog tell me what they are willing to do and to what extent. We recently started integrating clicker training for one of the shibas, and the other two caught on so we've been working with that to 'relearn' the basics. They are responding to it really, really well.

Sounds like an effective training method from what I have read. Having had Rotties myself and a shiba, don't be TOO frustrated when you realize how much easier Rotties are. I personally think that if you are confident in your abilities to train and discipline your puppy yourself and perhaps get your pup involved in some puppy play groups so he/she can get the much needed socialization. Trust your gut.
