He's gone at least 6 times since 2am last night, all very watery and forced. He also has a slight fever. He couldn't even hold it and messed on the floor and cried. He never has accidents... The vet put him in Diarsanyl for his upset stomach, etc. I hate giving the dogs meds without trying a more natural approach but this was pretty severe last night. So he's on a liquid diet today - John boiled some chicken and just gave him the broth to drink throughout the day. Has anyone used this medicine? How long did it take to take effect? Does something like this mask the issue or actually help the issue (that caused the splody butt :) From what i read, it absorbs bacteria/virus or whatever is causing the issue and expels it naturally - is that correct? thanks much! ## kwyld · 2008-08-18T20:19:33.000Z I've never heard of that med but when my dogs have diarrhea I give them one dose of flagyl(otherwise known as metronidazole) and it clears it up. It's an antibiotic. I'm still alarmed though, I would bet that its some type of bacteria. but he had an ice cream consistency BM this afternoon instead of water so thats a plus. ## baanton · 2008-08-19T00:28:05.000Z It seems the best thing is to firm things up is to feed white rice mixed with some basic cooked meat (chicken, non-fat beef or pork?). Start with mostly rice, then gradually increase the meat amount. Use this alone, then gradually add back his regular food after the diarrhea is over. Josephine came with a sensitive tummy or gut, and we had lots of bouts as you are describing (or maybe just the puppy penchant for eating anything and everything?). Not so much lately as she has matured, thank god. The case of his fever was concerning. Otherwise, I have to say (in the absence of fever or other symptoms (vomiting, etc.)) generally speaking we have found the rice diet works just as well as any med the vet prescribed for her, and no doubt better for her too. Best of luck to Kitsune--- hope he's feeling better fast. ## _dlroberts · 2008-08-19T03:03:29.000Z I don't want to be an alarmist, especially since the vet did a stool culture, but vomiting is not indicated in humans as a symptom of salmonella. I have no idea if it is for canines or not. Either way, it won't make a difference until you have the results of the stool culture. It will help you determine exactly what antibiotic to use to kill the particular strain of bacteria that is causing the problem (assuming it is bacteria). ## tsukitsune (moderator) · 2008-08-19T10:49:09.000Z by all means - be an alarmist! i certainly am with my fur family! he still has a fever but he's much more active today and had a semi-solid but it was a funky color.. so we hope to get the stool result call today. The vet really wasn't concerned about the funky color of the stool and the meds make the stool funny colors. They told us to call them immediately if he vomits, loses interest in water or bloody stool. The vet this AM is happy the stool is beginning to solidify. They said watery diarrhea combined with vomiting and fever usually indicates salmonella in a dog but we're waiting for the stool results. I would put money on bacteria from the chicken. We practice complete safe handling with their food, this particular chicken back was free from the butcher, and had a bit of an odor to it. We had it frozen for over a month, thawed overnight, rinsed it, gave it. He got sick 5 hours later. And Bev, thank you for the rice idea. I was hesitant to do it because our dogs have been grain free for some time, but the vet suggested we at least try it for Kitsu's sake, so this AM he had boiled rice and chicken. ## TeamLaika · 2008-08-19T11:55:45.000Z I have used Diarsanyl in the past and I still have some on hand. This spring, Tuli was violently ill (acute onset). She was vomiting and had frequent watery diarrhea. She couldn't even keep a Pepcid down. She didn't eat for 4 days! Her fecal was negative, blood chemisty and electrolytes were normal. A complete barium radiographic series revealed nothing. I still have no idea what she scavenged that upset her tummy so much! Diarsanyl is sort of like sucralfate...it helps coat the intestinal lining and reduce irritation. In addition to the boiled chicken an rice, canned pumpkin will help firm up stool. (Plain pumpkin, not the spicey pumpkin pie kind). My dogs also like old fashioned plain cooked oatmeal with some yoghurt. I hope he's on the mend soon! ## _dlroberts · 2008-08-19T12:18:44.000Z I'm glad he's showing signs of improvement. I forgot to mention to make sure he's getting enough water. When there is so much loose stool dehydration is a big concern. When I had salmonella, I actually had to get 2000cc of IV fluids because I just couldn't stay hydrated. And I was drinking as much as 160 ounces of gatorade a day! If it continues for much longer, you may want to consider getting him some sub-q fluids to help is body fight off whatever is causing the problem. ## kojichan · 2008-08-19T23:00:02.000Z I would tend to suspect salmonella poisoning, but based on the fact that the meat smelled a bit funky, AND that symptoms developed so soon afterwards, I think he just ate spoiled meat. Five hours is awfully soon for salmonella poisoning to manifest itself. In humans at least, the gestation period is 1-3 days before symptoms develop. Good luck. P.S. Agree with Team Laika on the boiled chicken and rice, canned pumpkin. Also pedialyte, and not just water, is good for the dehydration problem -- need to replace those lost electrolytes. ## tsukitsune (moderator) · 2008-08-20T12:11:55.000Z Kitsune had a normal stool consistency and color today! woo! If i'm the only dog owner who gets this excited about poop.... :)) I'll have to conclude that he had some funky chicken.
