# How does your dog gets along with the heat? Sophies heart update Hi there! For one week now we have great weather in Austria, around 25°C so in the sun you feel lucky if you just wear a top and a short and nothing more... Im really happy about this great weather and was much outside with Sophie, but shes really worrying me cause shes panting just after few jumps.. The last week we made 2 great trips (2 hours and 4 hours) she played a lot, but was really tired at the way home, more tired than ever before but at home she was normal again and reacted to dogs on the street and my cats..so i thought ok..it was really a hard day but shes ok... but today she lied down after we met only 2 old dogs, just for a second cause shes really reactive to everything but its definitly something new... in winter she was playing 2 hours with the other dogs and walking home was a fight cause she didnt wanted to go....but now i almost had to drag her home cause she really was tired and walked really really slow and when we had to wait somewhere she lied down again..and that after beeing half an hour in the dog park with just one old dog doing 5 jumps and another dog telling her that she was to active...now shes sleeping like a stone for hours and only reacts when we walk around or a big noise she has short hair and was born in the biggest heat in Bulgaria (35-40°C) so i really dont understand why she gets this tired.. is it just the change of the weather and she has to adjust? Im really worrying about her heart or something like this.. think i will visit the vet in the next days and limit Sophies activities in the next days are your dogs getting along with the heat? Am I worrying to much? ah i forgot to say that there was fresh water available at the dog park and she drank a lot..im mentioning this just for the case you thought i had forgotten to bring some along and Sophie was suffering of too few water :) ## StaticNfuzz · 2009-04-13T21:10:12.000Z Well that is pretty warm to a furry dog if you have had much cooler weather previously and not a gradual warm up in the season. Some dogs take the heat better than others. Being sluggish is not uncommon in 77F or 25 C. The darker the coat the more they absorb the suns rays. It's probably a good idea to have vet look at her in any case and also check her legs to make sure her hips, elbows or joints are not giving her any trouble. All it takes is a twist or two and she could be sore or have mildly sprained a ligament. Some dogs cover up their pain and the only way you may know is by their grumpiness, holding the tail down or slow movements. If they sit or lay too much and it is abnormal for the particular dog that could be an indicator too. Nemo hates the heat, and does not like to play hard when it is 25c out, especially if it is sunny. However he is a Shiba and has a much warmer coat than a staffie mix. ## LisaW · 2009-04-14T18:47:51.000Z visited the vet today legs and heart were ok at the vet, but she said its definitly not ok for a young dog like her having such problems with the heat... we have a date for a heart-ultrasonic-examination for tomorrow.. i hope that nothing will come out of this and its really just the change its not like she doesnt want to play.. if theres a dog she will play until collapsing but when i end the game and we are on our way home shes really tired and lays down given the chance to...today it was the same again i got some natural medicine for her bones, muscles etc you know this growingpain stuff... but dont think that this is the reason for her fatigue... updates will follow tomorrow evening..wish us luck! Baba Lisa ## KFontaine04 · 2009-04-14T18:54:58.000Z Good Luck Sophie and Lisa! ## LisaW · 2009-04-16T05:55:51.000Z luckily everything is ok with Sophies heart... the next step is a blood screening but I think I will wait until next week cause I know it will be a great drama for her and theres still the possibility that she just has to adjust to the weather... yesterday evening, after the vet date, she even was a little bit active and sat again for a little time at our window to bark at the bad guys down on the street... afterwards she slept again but it was a good sign.. Maybe she does just need some time to adjust to the warmer weather after all. Being Austrian, I know how hot it can get really fast. The dog I used to have was a lot less active during those summer months, even when he was a puppy.
