# Black and Tan Shibas

It seems like the red shiba is the most popular in america, every breeder site I see has red shibas. Are there any breeders that specialize in black and tan? I know that the red is the dominant, and the black is recessive so that getting a black and tan could be harder. Plus it seems that every american dog show that has shibas shows reds. I am not looking for a black and tan shiba, this is just a general question.

the smaller local shows usually have a couple of B&T's - I think judges tend to favor reds because that is what they are used to seeing.

Black and tans are harder to show, thats why you see way more Reds in shows. Riverview Acres specializes in Black and tans. Fallscreek Shibas also has awesome black and tans.

EDIT-I ment Sanshou Shibas in Oregon has some nice B&T/tri. There are a few more breeders in Oregon that also have them.

It is hard to get this coat colour just right for the ring, so this has resulted in less desirable breeding practices IMO, which actually in part stopped me from purchasing a particular dog I was interested in. In this case I do feel AKC is encouraging a beauty pageant mindset because the flashiest and showiest B&T/tri is the one that has a better chance of catching the judges eye up against some nice average reds, even though that is actually going against the breed standard (and ideal temperment) for B&T/tri. Conversely, a more correct B&T/tri against an average red has less chance of winning from what I have gathered because the judges are not as familiar with this colour.

Heh, the show world is so small. I contacted Fallscreek Shibas and she told me she's friends with Katja.

Tina from Fallscreek is also friends with the woman im getting my puppy from, she also breed the father.
