To begin with you might want start your search with national shiba club of america (NSCA) http://www.shibas.org/

Also look at the following links if you have not already: http://www.shibas.org/newstand/how_to_choose_breeder.html

http://www.shibas.org/health.html There should be some health screening of foundation dogs (parents or possibly grandparents) completed by the breeder.

Whomever you choose make sure they are willing to work with you throughout the life of the dog and take the dog back if it became necessary to do so.

Select carefully!

A very good breeder that a lot of people have liked is Kathy from Bali Hai shibas. She's located in Ridge, Suffolk County, and should be about an hours drive from you. She's really nice and is very involved with the breed.

You may also want to consider outside of the state. Take a look at Tenguai, I believe they are in NJ.

Both breeders (Bali Hai ad Tenguai) seem to be pretty dedicated to the breed.

PS: there is always the option of Rescue too - take a look at New York City Shiba Rescue - http://nycshibarescue.org/

An adult dog from a quality breeder or from a rescue can be so much easier to deal with at times. Although cute, puppies are a pain in the butt for quite awhile.
