# Tengu spam Since Cobalt was adopted, I decided to take on another foster dog. Today I picked up Tengu, a male akita. He was surrendered by his owner to a local kill shelter, and was pulled by the spitz rescue just in time. Today I picked up Tengu, a male akita. He was surrendered by his owner to a local kill shelter, and was pulled by the spitz rescue just in time. Apparently, the reasons his owner gave was that he was 'too big' and 'not nice with kids'. I sure wish people would try to solve their dog's problems instead of getting rid of it. He seems to get along pretty well with Sasha, so hopefully there'll be no issues with her. He's relatively calm, but gets nervous when kids run at him screaming. Also is food aggressive with male dogs. I'll let keep you all posted on how he does. Here's some spam I took today with my cam phone. He just got groomed today. Guarding food is a very Akita thing - I would consider that to be some what "normal" for the breed - not necessarily acceptable, but typical of the breed for sure. Definitely spam us more. My babies aren't food aggressive at all, so I'm not certain if it's an Akita trait. I can't believe it either that someone gave up such a dog. I've never had a dog quite this big before. and the hair is just coming off him like crazy, considering I've only had short coated dogs. this will take a bit of getting used to. so far he checked out my apartment, tried to mark a few times but I tugged on his collar and gave him a sharp 'no'. he started to eat out of Sasha's bowl. she completely doesn't care who does what to her food, so she just sniffed him cautiously. I think his size is scaring her, though. Tengu pulls on the leash, but not with his full strength thankfully (he weighs about 95 pounds). eventually he does calm down and walks with a loose leash by my side. but before we get to that it can be hard to hold him back. ## Leonberger (admin) · 2008-07-26T06:00:25.000Z He's very good looking! I didn't know akitas shed so much. maybe he's blowing his coat. Sasha was trying hard to get Tengu to play. she was jumping around him, play bowing and even nipping his muzzle a bit. whenever she got tired of getting no response she would just lie in front of him and whine while wagging her tail. he was just ignoring her antics until she nudged him in the side with her nose, then he growled and snapped. after this she stopped being as boisterous. too bad he wouldn't join in though- she loves to play. are akitas typically non-playful? and should I be concerned about his growl and snap, or is this just a normal correction? ## brada1878 (admin) · 2008-07-27T03:34:47.000Z Akita shed a lot - and its relatively constant compared to the other Nihon-Ken... but when they blow their coat... jezz... for get it, its hectic! We have 3 blowing their coats right now - it's a little much! Our Akita are not playful in the house, but they are playful outside. Thanks for taking in another foster. He is a handsome boy. It stinks that you got him when he is blowing his coat, that is a lot of hair! Hopefully things are still going well.
