So I have told you guys about Ahi but didn't really get into Hilo's teeth - after all his teeth are the main reason we went to Colorado Springs yesterday. Ahi's thing was just supposed to be a "double check" since our vet in Taos said her xrays were fine. Anyway, Hilo didn't have anything done to his teeth. The Dental Vet said that the original sealing that was done was really the best Hilo's teeth will ever get. He didn't even think they needed a cleaning since they were not dirty and they were just stained... he said that staining will always be an issue since is teeth have no enamel and are therefore rough. We inquired about getting caps made for his teeth, and he said that it would cost $6k + and would require a separate appointment and separate does of Anastasia for each tooth. He also said that it really would only cover like 8 teeth at the most leaving the others to be in the condition they are now. He recommended we wait and see if his teeth harden more because it could take up to 2 years. He also recommended we give him some daily pain meds to help his discomfort. He said he feels that his teeth issue is not hereditary and the it is not Enamel Hypoplasia but instead Enamel Calcification. He thinks Hilo may have developed the tooth issue from being sick as a pup. So, no good news for Hilo either - I was really hoping they could improve his quality of life a bit. Our plan now is to wait till he is 2 years old then reassess the issue to see if we want to do the caps. ----

Grrrr. What a frustrating day. Hang in there Brad, my suspicion is that it can only get better from there!

Isn't there some sort of supplement that would help him? Poor Hilo. Do you feed him a special diet as it is now with his teeth? The price of caps is crazy!!! I'm hoping Tsuki's dental issue is resolved solely in the procedure tomorrow..

I'm sorry to hear about Hilo too Brad! [ I know I shouldn't play favorites, but he's mine of all your pups :) ] Hopefully, in time, his teeth'll harden more.~

nope, no supplements - I asked him and he said "there is really nothing, think about it, if there was something human doctors would be all over that!"... good point. :oT ----

:( Poor Hilo. I'm so sorry Brad. I don't know what else to say.

Sorry to hear that there wasn't much good news for Hilo. They can only put one cap on at a time? That seems really bizarre.

Aww, poor Hilo. I'm sorry that it didn't quite go as you planned ... hopefully his teeth will harden and he'll feel a little better when he returns to the vets and if you decide to do caps or not. Thats a tooon of money. :(

I didn't realize that his teeth were uncomfortable. I'm so sorry to hear there wasn't more they could do.

Thanx guys. :o) Well... his teeth are more sensitive than a "normal" dogs but he doesn't know that... so really its all status quo for him. Maybe the drugs will make him feel better too. ----

How did you come to realize Hilo's teeth were not normal?

## brada1878 (admin) · 2008-06-11T23:37:24.000Z
When they grew in to be very small and porous. ----
