This is Loa, our new Shikoku puppy! She is from the latest Mike and Akio Akashima breeding - she is super sweet. Loa is potentially the start of our [very small] Shikoku breeding program.

So far everyone has accepted her nicely, she is a mellow little girl so even Maui seems ok with her! I would say she is 1/10 as hectic as Ahi was at this age... but we only just got her, things can change fast.

Sweetness!

Just give her a week or two before she starts creating some chaos, lol -grins-.

OMG I CANT BELIEVE IT!  She is freaking adorable!!  Now you BETTER go to the meetup!!!  But does she have her shots to even go?   grrr

I cant wait to meet her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can I have her AND Hilo???

Congrats on the new puppy! Very cute, is that necessary to say? It is a puppy after all...

Anyhow, glad to hear everyone is getting along, it's nice that your pack is so easy going (at least in the accepting new dogs aspect, ad for the most part). I can just imagine Nemo constantly slamming her into the ground and demanding submission.

Also, I just thought for a second about what you must spend on dog food, vet bills, etc, and my debit card started crying.

O...M...G!!!!

When did you get her? I didn't even know you wanted another one. Fill me in! What happened to the great Shikoku waiting list?

There is no doubt she's a sweetie - I'm telling you, Mikey makes sweet pups. Just spend lots of time praising and snuggling her and you'll have a smoochie poochie like Tenji and Ronan. Ronan can't stand to be out of my sight. He LOVES to be held, cuddled, touched, fussed over.

Congrats!

Oh, but what does Hilo and Ahi think?

Our vet bills are really out of control at this point... it's kinda ridicules. Basically, I have my full-time job that we live off of - then I have contract work, and that is what pays for the pups. I work close to 24/7.

As for the story of how we got Loa - it all stems from Sage / Rakka... when we got to the point of accepting the fact that we will have another Shikoku a lot of thought that we have had thrown around came to the for front - like breeding them. basically, we got so stoked to get Sage that we had prepared ourselves for another Shikoku - then when things changed (for the best) we realized that we wanted to move forward with our plans to get a Shikoku and potentially breed them. So I sent an email to Katja expecting to be added to a long list of others waiting for a pup. Come to find out she had just had a litter and there was one female left - and no one was waiting for a female... so we looked at her pictures and talked to Katja a lot and realized she was really the perfect dog for what we are looking for... so I sent in our $ and 3 weeks later here she is.

We got lucky too - because Peggy was getting a pup from this litter too and happened to be driving to Georgia this weekend. so the puppies where shipped and arrived in Ohio on the 19th, and Peggy drove Loa down today (the 20th). We met Peggy, for the first time, in Ellijay and picked her up. Peggy was very helpful and nice. :c)

Ahi has been amazing with Loa, she has become very motherly towards her -  it's really cute! Hilo has been a little odd towards her - not aggressive - but WAY over excited. So we have had to keep him away from her a bit, because he could easily crush her with his size. Maui has also done exceptionally well - Loa is really mellow so I think that has helped the integration.

I just watched the videos. She reminds me SO much of Ronan at that stage. Yeah, you might have a mischievous little snuggler there. Cool that you met Peggy!

## ddowdemers · 2007-10-21T23:07:26.000Z
Congrats on your ever expanding Asian "wolf" pack.  Loa reminds me so much of Tenji as a "wee" little one.  Michelle tells me that Mike produces wonderfully gentle pups and if Tenji and Ronan are examples, then you will have a lovely little girl.   Tenji is a major snuggler and is more affectionate every day.  However, he is a rascally boy and he loves to play.  I can't wait to see pictures of her development.

How is the baby doing?  Did you make it to the meetup?  Why dont you let us borrow your pack to get Joji!

We took her to the vet today, and she is healthy and happy.  :c)  She and Hilo are really funny to watch, she attacks him - it's funny.

She is very sweet!  I'm sure she'll be a delight to have around.  I see in your signature it still says you're getting a kai!  When will that happen?

## brada1878 (admin) · 2007-10-25T00:40:39.000Z
sometime soon... December or Jan.... we will see tho. We have been on the list waiting and waiting.

We are waiting to get a puppy from Peggy's litter (they should be back in the states in less than 2 weeks!) It's between a male and a female. Right now we have 2 border collies and a shiba/chow cross. They're all male (and neutered). If we were to get the male, he would be neutered. If we got the female, we were debating whether to fix her or not. Are your other dogs fixed? Do you anticipate any problems when the female goes into heat?

## brada1878 (admin) · 2007-10-30T15:25:55.000Z
Hi Tommy & Jen - welcome to the forum!

Congrats on the upcoming Shikoku puppy. I just met Peggy for the first time a few weeks ago - he and her husband are very nice people.

Yes, I do expect to have some issue when Loa goes into heat. All of our dogs are fixed except Hilo and Loa, it will be a while before we get Hilo fixed so I have a feeling that if he is not fixed when Loa goes into her first heat we will have some craziness to deal with. We are in the process moving, and our new place has 2.5 acres and we plan to fence it in a way that gives us the ability to separate the dogs if needed.

## brandon_w (admin) · 2007-10-30T15:49:02.000Z
Brad you will have craziness for sure, I'd probably plan on keeping them seperated at all times.  I imagine it would be hard to try and stop a hormonaly raging Hilo from doing what he wants.

Also even neutered males can try to mount and mate an in heat female.  They can even still "tie up", they just can't make babies, however it could be really uncomfortable for the female, and once they are tied you have to let them finish.

## brada1878 (admin) · 2007-10-30T17:00:40.000Z
Yea I know, we have done a lot of reading on that - and spoke with our vet about it... We are preparing for it. We plan to have several segregated fenced areas for the males and the females on our property - that is why we were looking at house with a good size piece of land.

It will be interesting - we may not even venture into the breeding arena yet, it all depends on how it goes with Loa and what our situation is when it comes time to really think about it. I mean she is only 11 weeks old, so we have time.

## ShikokuSpirit (moderator) · 2007-10-31T03:29:59.000Z
You don't have to worry about breeding Loa until she is between 3-4 years of age.

## brada1878 (admin) · 2007-10-31T15:32:04.000Z
Yea, that was my point - we have a long time before any breeding would even enter the equation.
