We just picked up this book on Sunday and I really find it very informative! http://www.rei.com/product/714408 I'm not sure if there are similar books for other states/territories, but if there are I would highly recommend picking one up. Not only does it tell you what to expect at every inch of the trails, it gives a couple great checklists for you and your dog. There's also a really nice section on doggy first aid, and how to handle anything that might come up when you're on the trail. We'll be taking a VERY short hike (not even a mile... which is what our neighborhood walk is) this weekend to a lighthouse on a nearby island - SO excited to test out the bigger trails when Keiko grows up a bit! **Found a link to other areas! http://www.rei.com/search?query=best+hikes+with+dogs&button.x=0&button.y=0

Nice find! I've been looking for something like this for the Atlanta area and haven't been able to find it. Now I did! Some more here on the publisher's site.
