# The thread of Kuma, the Akita - May 17th balloon spam Yep, it is official, I'm waiting for my Akita. Just made the reservation today, I should be going to pick him up middle March/early April. They were born 8 days ago. We're still juggling names, so I can't tell you anything yet, but I might ask for some opinions later on. Not to mention i like Akitas a lot! Brad - Nop, the parents are Sanae Go and Kaishi Go Sichimen Kensha. Sanae is owned by an italian breeder, i think and Kaishi is a japanese import of Silvia. In random order, with the meanings I managd to get form some websites: Kami - kami are spirits in Japanese mithology. Some translations mention it as "God", but it seems to be wrong. Tsuki - Moon Yuuki - Courage Kumo - Cloud (this is an alternative to Kuma) Yushi - Hero Kami and Yuuki seem to be running ahead of all the others. No offense to anyone but I find it hilarious that everyone's japanese origin dogs have japanese names but their owners are white as can be. But at the same time..I find it hilarious that japanese origin dogs have "american" names. It seems so out of character. And, since in Portugal Akitas are not a common breed, i think an uncommon name will fit. Sad to say I already have the name picked out for my shiba already. And his parents wont even be bred till this fall. So I would go with Kami or Kumo. And the pain in the butt trying to get people to pronounce Yuuki right will keep me aggravated for years. ## hondru (moderator) · 2008-02-05T21:43:12.000Z I prefer Yuuki to Kami.  I guess Kami seems sort of feminine to me.  I think Yuuki is my favourite of all the names you listed.   okiron, I've noticed that people do that with all dog breeds.  I was researching Norwegian Buhunds recently and it seems like every other dog is named Loki or Odin!  I like Japanese names on Japanese dogs because it really seems to suit them.  I think the nihon ken sort of have an oriental look about them, moreso than say, a Norwegian Buhund has a Norwegian look.  Of course, I like all of the names Brad picked and they're all Hawi'ian!   This just reminded me of when I told my Nana what we were naming Tojo.  She said, "You know, when I was little, I remember burning Hideki Tojo in ephigy."  I met a Japanese fellow at the dog run once and he burst out laughing when I called out to Tojo to come. ## brada1878 (admin) · 2008-02-06T02:03:19.000Z I like these names: Tsuki Yushi But all of the names you came up with are very nice! I don't envy you having to make the decision! ---- One of the most funny things I ever heard/saw was at a dog park this guy had 3 French Bull Dogs... He had named them Doug, Nancy, and Steve - and he was a Japanese man.... Something about the mash up of cultural oddness just made me laugh for like an hour. The gentlemen spoke very broken English and couldn't understand why I was laughing when he called his dog's. ---- Anyway, I think Japanese names for a Japanese dog is a nod to the dogs heritage... A respect thing I guess. But what do I know, as Heidi pointed out, I named all my dogs after random Hawaiian words and places. ## Romi (admin) · 2008-02-06T06:12:38.000Z Here are some Japanese names I like: Genki - Cheerful Hiroshi - Generous  Riki - Strength Kana - Powerful Rai - Trust Jun - Obedient Kazu - Peace  Chibi - Small/Tiny (hehe just thought it would be funny to meet a Huge Akita named Chibi) All the dog's that i've had in my life growing up all had japanese names, but none of them were japanese breeds. Golden Retriever - Chako Mini Poodle Mix - Maruko Jindo - Hanako Except a pomeranian I bought for myself, I named her Twinkie and my sister got a Maltese Mix we named Buddy.  Well thats all i can think of right now...If I think of anything else, I'll let you know ## Leonberger (admin) · 2008-02-06T09:21:24.000Z Thank you for your opinions! And thank you, Romi, for your suggestions! I guess I should explain my reasons for those names. I wanted a name that is Japanese, sounds good in Portuguese ( for example, Kona has a name that would be unthinkable in Portugal. The sound of it is the exact same sound of a strong bad word ) and English (since that is my girlfriend's native language), and isn't very long, no longer than 2 syallables because it would be easier for the dog to get it. Other than sounding good, the name had to have a meaning that wasn't anything bad or weird. It didn't have to be anything poetic or anything. And then there are the things a given name makes you think of. A lot of which I make up! As you can see, there is: Lynxiene...and I'm keeping a pup from her first litter, which will be "A-Litter" (late 2008/early 2009). I'm still deciding boy or girl, it just depends upon whichever she has and whichever pup expresses the most qualities I'm hoping to produce. So far I've come up with: - Akaylis (girl) - Airreya (girl) - Airreius (boy) Depending on the type of breed...I'd like to name my future male kitten Kazieus. And yet my Shikoku will most likely all possess Japanese names. I like "Old-Japanese" style names though. And some I may make up. For example, I thought about Ayazumi for when I get my female Shikoku. If I had been able to name my Shikoku boy, I would have gone with Keisuke or Keisukito. Though his name, Shoushuu, seems to be appropriate...I have no clue what it means =(^-^`)=. Naming animals are fun! I had a rabbit named Adonolas. Most likely all my future animals will have "odd" but "very cool" and "fun names, lol! Basically, I like naming them names that nobody has or is not very common. I actually have a bunch of Shiba puppy pictures, one of which will be Joey, but his breeder asked me not to post them since she's had other people advertise with her pictures in the past.
