We needed a collar for Kona to wear when in the yard in case there any more incidents where we need to grab him [like his Ahi incident]. We followed Sarah's advice and went to LDS Leather - they are REALLY nice over there and super helpful. LDS's collar are very impressive as far as quality goes, we are very pleased! We did have a hiccup tho - our first collar we ordered for him was a 1.5 inch thick and ended up just looking ridiculous. So I re-ordered the same collar [minus the studs - looked to "biker dude" for our tastes] in a one inch. Of course now we are wishing we had gone with a 1.25 inch... but it still looks nice... The original: The new, smaller version: ---- He wasn't being real cooperative with the collar pics, so I got some funny outtakes: *snoring "I'm sleeping dad, leave me alone!" "seriously dad, go away!" "I'm not joking..." "Please go away?" ---- I think we will give this collar to Ahi and order Kona a slightly thicker version. This collar is made with "harness leather" and has an elk skin lining. We got the "hunter's collar" because it provides a little bit more safety as they can get out of it if it gets hung on something [that's the purpose of the ring at the top of the collar]. ---- If any one wants the first one we ordered, you can have it. I have more pics of it too. ----

Very nice. It suits him! Can someone clue me in as to what LDS leather is? It doesn't have anything to do with Utah, does it? lol

Oh I see. Sorry, just a bit of mormon humour there.

Yeah, but looks aren't everything. See? I can be funny.

Hahahaha. Oh wow. You guys crack me up. ---- Brad, I'm soooo jealous. I have a set of collars and leashes all picked out from lds for Lucy and Joey but I just can't buy them right now. Sounds like you got all the upgrades I want too. Grrrrr. :-)

Um, that's a weird coincidence. I actually have a 1.5 inch thick black leather collar I bought for Kohji with spikes but it's way too big. His official collar he wears all the time has the o ring in the back just like the one you got for Kona, but it's brown and has a nameplate with engraving on it.

Kelly - That is a very weird coincidence! I guess Kai people all think the same... or is it great minds think alike? Heidi - My wife actually had the same thought about the Mormon thing and LDS - when I showed her this post she said "See, I'm not the only one!". Dave - I feel your pain, you had to shell out a ton of money to fix a knee and can't get your dream collar. :o\ ----

Yea, Kona is starting to look a lot more normal now, I think his muzzle needs to grow a little longer before he is 100% done. He is 50lb now! ----

Kona is getting to be such a Tank! He's one of those Hummer H1's that they discontinued ;D The collar is very nice, I think it suits him. I'd love to see pics of when you get one on Ahi ;p~

Chad just told me at dinner before I read this post he turned down the collar... : ( But Sasha really doesnt have a neck and normal collars sit on her head. BTW I love Kona!

Kona looks kind of bad a$$ in his leather!

I kept meaning to ask but of course I kept forgetting whenever I checked the forum. How do you figure out what width a collar you want? Obviously you don't want it becoming a neck brace but will it hurt anything for being too thin?

## _dlroberts · 2008-09-10T15:33:45.000Z
Rina: A properly sized collar should be the width of two vertebra. Too thick and it restricts movement and too thin and it can cause injury. The problem is measuring the width of the vertebra. I think erring on the large side is better than the small side.

Ooo ok thanks Dave and makes sense. I've always just relied on my grandma when it came to doggie supplies. I'm a newbie when it comes to items.

Brad: Thanks for sharing the pics of Kona--- love your sense of humour with the captions! (Or should I say LOL/LMAO? It's hard for me to get used to just using acronyms to keep it short!!!)... Josephine has a leather collar, too. It's just about the width of the one you're showing in the pics (possibly the width of the wider one you're getting). I don't recall where we bought it because it was originally Joe's collar that he wore for many years, but we love it (because of obvious sentimental value, among more practical reasons) and it fits Josephine, too (luckily we can cinch it in enough for her smaller neck)... It was bright red when we got it --- now nice faded muted red... guess that might be some kind of a fashion "retro" statement? Don't know. We have bought her 2 other collars that aren't leather, but we keep going back to the old one...
