Never say goodbye for $150,000.00?

edited May 2008 in General
I just saw on Yahoo's main page that a California company is now cloning pet dogs for $150,00.00. What do you guys think?

Heres the video: http://gmy.news.yahoo.com/v/7924569

and heres an article accompanying the headline: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/02/19/earlyshow/living/petplanet/main3843862.shtml

I have many mixed feelings but was wondering what you guys think of this?

There's too much too learn about if you want to walk the path that leads you to the point where there is too much to know about cloning yet.

Marketing, the dangerous kind. And they say they can't guarantee personality. They can't guarantee anything then. A pet that looks exactly the same but doesn't act the same isn't your pet.

I think the cloning of pets of any kind should be banned. What a waste of money. If you have $150,000 to spend, go to your local shelter or rescue, adopt a dog for $300 or less and donate the other $149,700 to other dogs in need.

I agree with you 10000000000% brandon. Why not use that money to a good use.

I think that is a core ethical issue - why in the world would you need to clone a replica of your dead pet when so many are out there, probably resemble your old pet, homeless and dying because of it!

Just because Fido 2.0 looks like old Fido will never ever mean you are getting your dog back! It takes denial to a whole new level!

    What a shame.

Yea I dont think I could ever clone my dogs even if it was available at your vet to do so. I mean, it would be even more depressing to clone your dog and then it is the complete opposite of your dog. Then what? Give it away? Its just aweful. What these people do to make some money.

I agree with everyone! Besides, if I cloned my dog I would never know the love for a new dog? None of it makes sense.

It would just seem too weird to me, having an exact replica of my pet that wasn't actually my pet. Imagine having a clone of a family member who looked just like them, but wasn't them? It would just be weird.

I think it's a waste of valuable resources, both material and intellectual.

No kidding. How about they try to find a way to make gas prices cheaper rather than worry about cloning. Geesh. Just what the world DOESNT need while people are going bankrupt and losing their jobs and houses, yet they think we can spend $150k on something so pointless. Arg.

Am I the only one getting a freaky "Lassie meets the Boys from Brazil" vibe?
    :o)

I have to say that it disgusts me. I understand the heartbreak of losing a pet. Lord knows I have shed more of those tears then I care to recall, and sadly will have to again in the future. But even a clone would not replace Piglet, Moto, or Himiko. Same DNA doesn't mean same dog. Identical twins have the same DNA and are not the same person.

And I am with Brandon and Jen, $150,000 could do so much for the shelter pups who are getting killed daily in this country.

    GROSS

And poor cloned dog. It'll be forever compared to the original. "The REAL Sam wouldn't have done that!" and so forth.

LMAO I went to go look it up. Knew of the book/movie but never actually knew what it was about. Now the South Park episode I saw the other day makes sense.

ummmm....never saw rose red....not green mile...
Do you like horror? Have you seen like wishmaster or It?
  • edited November -1
I like some horror, depending on what kind it is. Never heard of Wishmaster.

Rose Red and Green Mile are not in the same genre as Pet Cemetary. Pet Cemetary is more Thinner or It. It goes more toward horror than spiritual.

Best line of the book..."Hello Darling" it said.

Ooo ok I can do Thinner type movies.

I'm a bit of a movie buff and I went through a phase on horror - I swear from 1997 prior I had seen every B horror movie and all mainstream. While I don't watch them as much anymore, I can't stay away from a good vampire movie - they're my fave.

Thank you LJ, I should of known you would be helpful. I didnt even think of Thinner. It is very classic Stephen King horror.

Kurt doesn't like horror films....says their corny. The truth is, they actually scare him. Hahaha. It's funny to me. I love horror films, but hate watching them alone. Though I find I'm more scared if I force Kurt to watch one. Is that me being all girly? Weird.

Green Mile was AWESOME. So was Rose Red. I mean the books, but the movies were great too!

this will show my sicko side, but I find most horror movies to be funny. Most of them are just so stupid - my fave series was Halloween (Michael Myers) - there are little tricks in the series that alerts you to upcoming kills, etc. I liked Zombie's remake - probably the best of the bunch. The movies that I find that would actually scare me are ones that are more realistic in nature - Psycho for one - it is the main reason my brother has a glass block shower. Some horror movies go above and beyond - I don't like watching horror films that have kids being killed or that they are the killer - those bother me.

I love a good suspense film - my nieces and nephews judge how good it is by if I jump during the movie (rarely), if I figure out who did it (often), and whether I buy it. BTW, if anyone ever sees the B-movie Night of the Demon Lover on DVD - let me know - it's classic B-move (you can see cameramen in the mirrors, the boom drops in a couple of times, pretty fun).

I read a lot of books - they have a better chance of scaring me than any movie - I can twist up some pretty nasty scenarios when the mind calls for it. Green Mile was really good - I loved the book and the movie. I was not as thrilled with the Rose Red movie, but I still bought it.

Just realized we totally hijacked this thread...sorry.

I hate to rehash this, but look at this article. It makes my stomach hurt. They are auctioning off a chance to clone your dog. Its called "best friends, again". Gross.
