List of Dog Friendly Places

edited July 2013 in General
I searched the forum and did not see a post specifically about dog friendly places to take/socialize our pups/dogs and thought this thread might be helpful to all of us and future members, especially during the summer and/or holidays when people are traveling to new places for vacation/visiting family/friends.

In central Alabama we have:
Lowe's
Petsmart
Petco
Home Depot (the one in Pelham is not particularly fond of dogs)
Multiple parks (Homewood, Birmingham, Pelham, Alabaster, Chelsea, and numerous others)
Dairy Queen (for outdoor dining only)
Full Moon BBQ (outdoor dining)
Rojo (Birmingham Restaurant- outdoor dining)
Bruster's Real Ice Cream (They make a free sundae with dog bones crumbled on top for their furry customers)
Wilhagan's of Tuscaloosa (Neighborhood bar with 'seating available for your dog' lol)
Shrimp basket- Tuscaloosa ("Well-behaved dogs welcome on patio")
Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens- Leashed dogs are allowed on the grounds- not in buildings
Ruffner Mountain Nature Center- Leashed dogs allowed on grounds- not in buildings- 11 miles of trails
Oak Mountain State Park- We like hiking with our dogs here. Dogs are not allowed on beach area or at petting zoo
Urban Outfitters- Leashed, well mannered dogs allowed in store (Summit location)

There are other places all over Alabama but this is a pretty good start :D

*If anyone is traveling to/through Alabama I would be happy to expand this list for you to include hotels, rest areas, etc. if needed)

  • You might be able to start writing Dog Lover's Companion to Alabama, I live in CA and had a couple of copies of the CA version

    http://www.dogloverscompanion.com/guidebooks/index.html
  • I was going to make a website that gave dog friendly places. I hate how bringfido and other sites are not user friendly. Their community base is also very lacking with updated information... maybe my next project. Anyone have any site name suggestions?

There are a lot of restaurants I frequent in Gainesville, FL that allow dogs.
  • neiman marcus and nordstroms.
  • I keep a tumblr for my dog friendly experiences in my city, but I'm awful at updating it, so I end up with a lot of pictures on my phone and nothing to show the world.
  • When I lived in SF Bay area, basically every restaurant with outdoor seating allowed dogs. Now since I've moved to North Alabama, I have to call ahead before even trying...most do not. Sometimes when I walk up and ask, they look at me like I am a low class nut! I've even been kicked out of Dick's Sporting Goods. Dog owners on the West Coast - you better appreciate how good you have it!!!

To add to Kuma123's Alabama list:
    Five Guys
    Chipotle
  • @BearMom,
Things are changing, some restaurants require the dogs to be tied outside the patio railing :-(
  • I just found out that Gainesville now requires restaurants to pay a fee in order to allow dogs to eat at the patio areas.
  • The whole city of Carmel, California.
  • I've done a dog vacation in Carmel. That is a fantastic place for dogs!

@rikumom, that sucks about having dogs tied outside the patio railing. That's like having my child stand outside the railing while I eat.

@rikumom, @bearmom - I think it may be a change in law the past few years. Basically if it's an outdoor seating area that has hedges, or permanent railing, the health department legally considers it an indoor space rather than an outdoor space.

Also, some places would rather remain dog friendly and risk the fine. The potential fine is often offset by the extra business from dog lovers. This is what our neighborhood hair salon does, so the dogs usually come with us when we get a cut. The problem is that while most people seem to be very tolerant of well behaved dogs, all it takes is one jerk to really make things difficult for a business. I knew of one business owner who had a customer start screaming about another customer's service dog. The other customer was exceedingly nice about it and had her dog lie in the corner, but the dog hater customer continued to complain the entire time she was there. The store owner was pretty furious, and after ringing her up, she was asked not to return again.

To add to the list, many book shops, and wine shops allow dogs.

    [Edited to add detail]

    Bars
Xicala - outdoor seating area (NYC, nolita)
    Tom and Jerrys (NYC, nolita)

    Restaurants

Landmarc - outdoor seating area (NYC, tribeca; unfortunately, the food is mediocre)
DBGB - outdoor seating area, beyond the hedges (NYC, noho; not ideal, but the staff is accommodating and will place you where your visibility and leash control is not impaired)
Peels - outdoor seating area (NYC, noho)
Bread - outdoor seating area (NYC, nolita)

That's all I can recall at the moment. I'll add more if I remember, or folks find it helpful.
