Oh my thoughts are "sending you home quickly".  I cannot imagine that he has not been seen yet.  He is so incredibly striking.  I am very glad to see his very visible tags, otherwise someone will believe they just witnessed an exotic animal loose or a wild cousin.  He is so handsome.

I am mentally thinking all day today "go home Fighter".  Wishing for the best.

I wasn't going to say anything due to the tone of this thread, but damn that is a really handsome Shiba. I mean really handsome! Fighter: if you don't go back home maybe you can come here? ;-) (I must say though, I'm a bit surprised that he appears to be off leash in at least one of those outdoors pictures)

There are a lot of people who hike off leash with their Shibas in big parks/forrest preserves.  That's where they can really do their thing, without fear of a car and roads.  I'm not sure if I'd do it, but in big open areas, if you have a good bond with them, they shouldn't stray to far out of sight and should come back (eventually).

I hope Fighter is found soon.

That just goes to show, even if you think you have your shiba "trained" off leash, and THINK they will never run away think that they will come back....never be certain with a Shiba....and regardless....make sure to get a tracking device on them! Lets just hope that it turns out for the best.

I know, I know.  Even though Jazz has done well off-leash (in a controlled environment), I worry about her getting lost.  When the Atlanta Humane Society did a special on micro-chipping for $10, I was quick to get Jazz done.  I wanted to make sure I was doing all that I could to find her in case something ever happened.

I know, I think EVERY dog should be microchipped. Its not that expensive, which I think most people think it is, but it could save their life! and I am uncertain if Fighter has one.Undecided

I let Keira and Kenji off leash at the dog park, but i watch their every move and stay close. Some people there even come to the dog park with their dogs unleashed and they end up being all over the place even before getting into the fenced in area. Not to mention its right next to a BUSY road. Grrr.

While we're on the topic of microchips, I thought I mention again that if you have your pet microchipped you can get them "lost pet medical insurance" which covers up to $3,000 of emergency medical coverage if they are ever reported lost. It costs $19/year so in my mind it's a no brainer. http://www.sheltercare.com/us/dog-insurance-emergency.asp?cuid=ID06 or http://www.petcareinsurance.com/us/dog-insurance-emergency.asp Also, if your microchip is from HomeAgain, then you have this coverage as part of your annual fee with them. You just have to call and activate it.

My vet charges $100 to do microchipping, but the humane society and many pet rescues do it for $10-$20.  I'm not sure how well micro-chipping would do in more rural areas, but I know of several dogs that were found because of micro-chipping.

I don't have to really worry about Jazz at the dog park.  With one exception, she stays by my feet (unless Dave picks her up and carries her away).  The one time she did walk off on her own, she would go about 10 feet and look back at me.  10 more feet and look back.  She finally got about 150 ft away, but she was the one keeping an eye on me!

None of my prior pets (and there are many) have ever been lost, or given the opportunity to get lost.  I know things happen, but this has just never happened to me.  I've always treated my pets like children, who have to be watched, all the time, or confined w/out the need for overseeing.

Thank goodness Jake is not a door bolter, but if he were, I still block him away from the door when visitors show or the door needs to be opened.   I cannot risk his safety and like a child, he does not know the dangers that exist for him.

But, I will microchip anyway, one day.

I don't remember who posted about the training on the doorbell - but I am working on it.  I thought that was a really cool idea - that way I'm not having to worry about there being a chance of Jazz going out the door.  This past weekend, the cable guy had to come out to the house because of the phone.  Jazz was running about with her "I have a new friend" look and the guy goes to the front door, holds it open while talking to another guy outside.  Jazz looked at me like, "Can I go out?  The door is open".  I told her to go crate and she looked at me with this in mind, "Me??  I'm not the idiot holding the door open with a dog who'd like to be outside."  She slunk off to her crate and was not happy.  I'll have to post some shots of her poking her head out of her crate.

Aww, poor Fighter.  He is a really handsome looking Shiba.  I hope he is found soon or one of those shelters has him in safe custody.

I kept thinking Utah or Arizona on the pictures.  Then noticing where he went missing I cannot help but wonder if these folks moved from his old home recently.  I guess they could have just been on vacation. If this were the case that the dog has moved recently then it might indicate where he is headed.  One can only think where the pack roams is where this handsome boy would prefer to be.  He looks very much at home in those pictures.

I would even get pictures posted in truck stops.  Highly mobile people run into dogs on the move much more frequently.  I guess there is alway that classic "lost and headed home" stories out there.

I thought very hard about microchipping here in Southern New Mexico.  I decided against it since our own animal control does not utilize it yet.  Only a few vets in town.  I would think that will change in time, but I also have a sincere desire to move north farther from any cities; and I highly doubt the microchip would bring me any closer under those circumstances.  Using our own better judgement is the only way to make this sort of decision.  I would imagine one day people will be microchipped too; I will still be last to get a cell phone Laughing.

    Thinking of Fighter!

    GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! Sealed

I just read a new bulletin from Fighter and they found him! YAY! Heres the bulletin:

Thank you to everyone who wrote and reposted the bulletin I sent out yesterday.

After almost 24 hours of being missing, a neighbor called and he was in her yard playing with her bison, goats and sheep. Needless to say, he was filthy and had to be hosed down, lol. He didn't like that very much since the water was cold so that was his punishment for making me worry as much as he did...but it was 70 degrees outside so he got off easy.

thanks again for all the kind words.

Great news!!!!  Glad to hear that he's safe and secure with his family again.

I think the neighbor had it wrong, Fighter was trying to figure out how to take out her bison, goats and sheep and eat them for dinner.

So glad to hear that he was found safe!

I hope his owner isn't so cavalier about him getting out anymore!!!

    No kidding tskitsune! =)

Some times things like these happen for the better so you can realize what you had and take better care of them. Im sure the owner took good care of him, but sometimes you think "ohh it will never happen to me" but when it does, sometimes its too late. Thank god this wasnt the case.

Good news to hear.  I hope this occurrence convinces the 20 year old to be a more responsible dog owner.
