Anyone familiar with Cj's Happytail Kennel in Ohio?

edited January 2014 in Akita (秋田犬)
Someone has asked me to look into this Kennel because they are considering an Akita puppy from there. I have not had time to sit down and research it yet so I thought I would ask here. Any info is helpful- good or bad. Thank you!

(This is not for me lol Just helping someone out)

  • Looking at their website, I'm not impressed and would definitely not get a pup from them.

There's no info on their breeding dogs except the one pic on the available section of a dam that doesn't really look to standard. No mention of health testing done on breeding dogs (OFA, CERF, etc).

Though they do have a return policy in their contract, health coverage is still only up to 1 year of age. Unless there is something wrong with a dog from the get go, most health issues won't pop up until the dog is at least 2yrs old

They do seem to only sell the pups under limited registration, and are supposedly involved in rescue, but there is no mention of what they do to determine if their breeding dogs are worthy to be bred. They don't seem to show, compete in dog sports (agility, obedience, etc), nor utilize them for any type of work.

They also have a paypal button on their main page, which if you click on will bring you to paypal with an order summary for purchasing a pup.

At best, this person is a BYB and one I would not buy a dog from.
  • I say we do an undercover stint on our way to NIPPO. They're also located in Ohio, lol.
  • I agree with @Calia's assessment and so will not repeat all the same points. Also, google revealed this atrocity (not linked from their main page):

  • @Kuma123, is it ok if I ask my breeder group that I belong too? Maybe they can recommend reputable breeder in the same area.
  • You won't usually find good breeders that explicitly state they only breed for pet quality....

I wish I could find that thread that stated "There's no such thing as a pet quality dog" or something to that effect.

  • Thank you all! I just haven't had time to sit down at my computer and look into it. I assumed it would be bad, or at least less than great, but didn't want to pass on my assumptions- which is why I came here to ask for opinions. Thank you again. I am passing along the information.

@BearMom, yes that would be great! Thanks!

The 'Gremlin' link you posted, Claire ( @PoeticDragon ), I clicked on that and WOW! WTH?

If any of you know of a good kennel in Ohio or reasonable distance, please let me know and I will pass that on as well.

    Thank you!
  • @Kuma123, where in Ohio is your friend located? I only ask so I can include neighboring states if close enough.
  • Your friend may want to check in with Pam Peterson, Tri-State Shiba Rescue. She probably has links with Akita folks as well.

    Here is the link:

  • Mt Joy Akitas. I know the dogs and they have awesome personalities.
  • @BearMom, the Akron area and thanks a lot!

    Thank you @sukoshi_mom!

@sjp051993, thank you! I will send that info on :) I like that you know the dogs there!
  • Or check with Mike or Donna Bennet at Liberty Akitas (in Oklahoma), because I know they know a lot of AA peeps, as Mike was the former Pres. of the ACA.
  • The breeder in Ohio that was recommended is Kassai Akitas (kassai@ymail.com). She doesn't have any pups now but your friend should contact her in case she might have a breeding in the future. Regardless, she would be a great source of BYBs to avoid in the area. She also recommended Mt. Joy Akitas (had a mid December litter).

There are more good breeders in Indiana and Michigan. But to make your friend's search a little easier, I say to contact either Kassai, Mt. Joy or Liberty to start.
  • Just got another Ohio breeder recommendation:

    Kyouji Akitas
    Defiance, Ohio

  • @shibamistress, thanks!

Thank you, @BearMom! I will pass all of this info along.
  • You are very welcome. Found out Mt Joy has a pup available if your friend wants to inquire.
  • so.. tell me where is akita from this website...
  • @BearMom, I sent him all of the info.

@timkim, I'm not sure I understand. There was only one adult pictured on their site. The 'breeder' is in Ohio. Is that what you were asking?
