Getting a foster dog

edited May 2008 in General
I'm getting a foster dog in a week or two, an Akita mix named Riksurai. I met him at a spitz rescue I volunteer at. Was going to take him this weekend, but then it turned out that he had heartworms. So as soon as his heartworm treatment's over, he'll come home with me. I'm hoping Sasha will be ok with it, since she can be nervous of strange dogs before she warms up to them, if she does at all. She did seem to be ok with him when they met though.

Isnt the treatment for heart worm longer than a few weeks? Cant wait to see pics, do you know mixed with what? Sasha seems to have gotten off to a good start!

The rescue told me that he needed to have a few weeks of rest, and that the treatment's short, since he was only very slightly positive, that's all I know.
He's mixed with Siberian Husky. lol, a 'huskita'

if he's a very early stage of heartworm than it really doesn't take that long at all. how wonderful! He's probably gorgeous!! What an interesting name, too!
If they got on well already, a good introduction will probably start everything off really well!! Good for you!

Thanks! And I agree that his name is rather interesting. He knows what his name is though! Every time I said "Riksurai" he'd glance up at me, head tilted to the side with a wag of his tail! He's so adorable!
...but when it comes to his past and the person who named him, it just makes me angry and sad thinking about it. Riksurai came to the rescue from a cruelty seizure. He was starving, beaten, diseased and traumatized when he first came in, according to the rescue. They weren't sure they could save him...you certainly can't tell that now, looking at that dog!
Brad- Yes, Sasha has met him when I took her to the rescue's kennel. She hasn't met him in the house yet. She was afraid at first, but he didn't try anything so she started going closer and being less nervous. as we took our walk together she was following him calmly. This is quite a breakthrough since she is usually extremely nervous around large dogs!

    wow, that sounds very promising!

It also sounds horrible what he went through... that's so sad.
