To Be Or Not to Appear Over-Reactive?

edited May 2008 in General
Jake's left eye has had some drainage for a while. I would just gently wipe the 'sleep' off and we'd go on about our day. A few days ago it seemed to really be watering and bothering him so I made a vet appointment, tomorrow, 8:45a. Today, it appears o.k. and there is no drainage or watering.

Not sure if it's allergies or what? Should I still take him in tomorrow for examination? The vet may think I'm dumb. You know, it's like when you have car problems and you take it to the mechanic then everything seems to be working properly when you get there....

I did this with his leg, the one he hurt doing a jumping acrobatic move trying to take what 'belonged to him' that I picked up from the floor, only to be looked at like 'well lady, if it was broken, you would know it'. Gosh, he had limped for a week!

What to do, what to do?

allergies have been pretty hard on my dogs this season - but it wouldn't hurt to just make sure. eye drainage could be from nothing - like dust in the eye - to allergies - to Lord knows what in a dog!

Agreed. Better safe than sorry. If the vet is worth anything, they'll treat you with respect and trust your description of the symptoms. If it were me, I would take him.

    I would, too

I feel you should do whatever brings you peace of mind. When I first had Nemo we were at the vet all the time, usually for very minor things that I have learned to take care of by myself know, or realize they are nothing.

It might be good to see if the doctor thinks it is allergies, so you can start tracking when they start, and then when they get worse (if they get worse). I know a few dogs that are heading into their severe itchy season.

motos eyes used to water a lot. Sometimes it would be green. We discovered he was allergic to grain. Especially rice and wheat. Apparently this is REALLY common in the primitive breeds. Once we eliminated grain his eye never oozed again (except for when he and piglet at those cookies-wheat ya know)

We didn't go to the vet today. His eye is fine and you guys are probably right, irritated from dust, a hair or the like. I saved at least $50 :-). If the condition continues and I become concerned again, we will make another appointment.

Jake played with 2 large yorkies last night at the neighbors. The largest challenged him when we arrived, but quickly realized Jake would have no part of that. All in all, he did very well. He wanted to play with them but they were petrified of him :-( Fortunately, my friend understood Jake was not aggressive and allowed the dogs to be dogs. She fell in love with Jake and has offered to 'babysit' whenever I go on vacation.

Well thats good news that his eye's are better today. Jake must be a sweety! Im sure you'll be getting babysitters lined up at your door when you need one in an instant! :)

Jake is too funny. He would go inside their house and bring out a toy, one by one. We all laughed! They even gave him a toy to bring home.

Oooo, I forgot to mention. She called him"handsome", which is exactly the word I use to describe him. I tell him all the time "handsome, handsome", so she affirms my sentiments :-)

Dave and LJ can recall this, Jake 'taunted' the largest yorkie "come on, bring it on', just like he did the male Shiba at the doggie park. Too funny! He then backs off. Can't catch him, not even another dog! Kara even said 'he's taunting him'. Jake ain't scared but he's not a fighter either, just relays 'you want this, come get it!' Let's play the game.

Create an account with photobucket (it's free) - upload the photo(s), then select the photo(s) and click generate HTML code at the bottom of your photos. Copy and paste it into the body of your comments and voila, your photos shall appear.

One note - I set mine to upload in a medium size, so that when it generates the code, people won't have to scroll left or right to view the photo on smaller screens.
