Josephine in the Woods

edited May 2008 in General
Well, my husband has not caught any wolves or deer on film, but here is a pic of Josephine. You'll see the Game Cam records the time of day, temp, etc. It's still very cool in central MN.

Thanks for the complements on Josephine!

We have looked at lots of pics from the camera as he has experimented with it a bit to ensure its working, aimed properly, etc. We are quite pleased with the quality, both day and night. Now just need to get some pics of the wild ones. I suppose the traffic patterns of the wild animals change constantly, and especially now with spring arriving and different food opportunities (yum, yum-- green grass--- no more bark!). The tracks of animals are not so easy to see without snow now either, but I'm sure its just a matter of time, moving the camera around a bit to different locations, and something will show up.

He told me he saw a deer 2 nights ago out in an open field grazing. The deer did not see Steve and he sat down in a chair he has out there (for observation) and watched the deer. He said the deer was about 200 yards away from Josephine when she saw it, and she moved closer by about 50 yards. Then the deer turned its head toward Josephine as it caught the movement, and Josephine instantly froze. Since Josephine wasn't moving, evidently the deer did not consider her a threat and kept grazing. Josephine just sat very still and observed it, just as Steve was doing. Eventually the deer moved off the field and into a stand of pines. Josephine watched it, then came back to Steve. He believes had the deer bolted and run, there would have been a whole different outcome (Josephine running after the deer, to lord knows where)!

Brad: The one we bought is a Moultrie I40 Digital Game Camera, purchased at Cabelas (an outdoors camping/hunting store here in MN -- don't know if they are nationwide). Ours is rather basic. Here are some of the camera attributes: Resolution= 4.0 mp, enhanced resolution=4M-2400 X 1800 (low and high settings are available). Besides picture resolution there other settings with variables include delay between pictures, # of pics per detection of an animal, etc. It has a Laser aim feature, and infrared for night photos. It has a video setting which has not been tried yet. This one does not have a video screen on it, but can be viewed via connectivity to TV or computer. We bought two 1GB memory cards, and swap them out rather than bringing the camera back and forth from the woods. It runs on 6 D-cell batteries, which reportedly will last about 6 months. Picture range is about 40 feet only, so this one is most likely not for the wide-open vistas.

Some of the other cameras available come with a conventional flash, viewing screen on the camera, higher MP, etc.
