He doesn't like getting picked up much, does he? He's just hit 6 months, so all #ell is breaking loose inside him right now. It might be interesting to see how that will affect his relationship with the others and his position with the pack. Interesting, of course, might not mean pleasant...
Rui is right on, it's the 6 month monster showing up to test us on EVERYTHING. He is a passively dominant little boy... which is the hardest to deal w/ imo.
OMG, Kohji does the same thing!!! He is a brat when he's tired, I thought I was doing something wrong raising him, but it must be the breed. If I were to pick him up though he would not be that passive :0
Josephine has always gone to bed willingly. Since she's the one and only, though, now she gets to sleep outside the crate so she just has to plunk down on her doggie bed and thats that. She stays put on her bed all night long, too, even if she wakes for some reason. She also loves being picked up and carried around by my husband (especially when being saved from a wolf)! Don't remember her ever protesting anything that involves being touched by one of us, even the annoying stuff like applying Frontline, tending a wound, etc. In fact, the vet staff comment on that too, as she seems to be the rare dog they see that doesn't get freaked out by shots or other intrusions committed in the name of medical diagnosis or treatment. She always comes through that experience with tail wagging from beginning to end...
Kona has turned the Demon vibe up 10 times as of this week. He now growls at Jen when she gets him to go inside. He has also snapped at Loa a few times because she has woke him up from a deep sleep.
He is just really challenging us lately, well not me, just Jen.
I will try to capture it on video, tho I am not sure Jen will be to stoked about that.
wow.. I'm sure his remaining in tact has something to do with it? Is the breed known to be as challenging? Are they also known to grow out of it in a pack setting* like yours?
*by that I mean as opposed to one dog belonging to one person
I'm sure being intact has a lot to do with it, also his age... he is 7 months now, prime time to be challenging others [like Jen] for a new place in the pecking order. He will grow out of it, when Ahi is better she will clear it up if he doesn't. lol.
Kai-Ken should be pack oriented and have a balanced temperament through life, but show a certain level of protectiveness for their pack and people.
So he's challenging Jen and snapping at Loa. If I recall correctly, he's more attached to Jen,right? And Loa is his best friend in the pack. He's starting to get his hormones going, and lashing out at the ones closer to him. Teenager much? About the rest of the pack? I know Ahi is out of the game for a while, but what about Hilo? And Kaia? No challenge there?
So the the challenge to Jen makes little sense, if any. Loa is close to him, and has a similar pack status, so he's reaffirming it, I'd say. He doesn't challenge Hilo, cause he loves him and is submissive to him. Does this mean he sees Hilo as having a higher status than Jen? Just trying to find some logic on his behaviour...
Lani's heat might be helping his hormones, for sure.
Hey Brad, Josephine went into heat, sort of to our surprise, when she was around 7 months old. The way we knew, instantaneously, is her condition had a profound impact on every dog in the dog park, male and female (and then she couldn't go to the park anymore until it was over--- about a 3 week or more span, as I recall). Anyway, these dogs were all behaving in ways their owners just did not expect! And several of the other dog owners told us this was what was going on. So I think Lani's condition is having a huge impact on Kona and his behavior, in spite of his (relative) young age.
I'm just curious how this will all work in your household of 7 doggies... I guess the intact male(s) will be/are sheltered from Lani and vice , or are you now ready to breed her (with Hilo, I assume)? Sorry to be nosey--- just not a part of dog life I'm too familiar with or thought about very much!
Rui - I think he is behaving that way towards Jen because she is in contact with him more than me, she is also very "hands on" with our dogs so she will always get the brunt of the attitudes. The dogs don't challenge me very often, but I tend to ignore them a lot [as a pack leader should]... I don't really let any of them initiate anything with me, I initiate it with them if I want interaction. So when I go to handle one of them they tend to be like "ok, WTF is going on?".

Bev - A dog in heat at a dog park is not a good thing. lol! I bet that was crazy. lol!
We have gone through Loa's heat already, so we are used to it... We keep the males separated from Lani - usually Lani is in the office with me anyway, even if the door is open for her to go outside outside [she's my buddy]. It's not as bad as you would think, the males just kinda whine and she whines but it's not like they are digging at the door trying to get to her or anything. Hilo tends to just kinda pout about it.
Lani will be bred, Hilo will never be bred due to his health issues.

We think our next dog will have to be female.

Yes, he is closer to Jen... she scolded him pretty good when he growled last night and now he is like a different dog around her... he learns fast.
Jen pointed something out too, Lani is in heat right now... so that could be adding to his teenager issues.

Hachi just finished hers, thank God, I think we took her in during the last 2 weeks of it.. Kitsune is not intact but was still all o v e r it!!
Poor Kona, he sounds like a frustrated teenager - he and my little brother would get on fabulously.
