Rabbit Encounter

edited May 2008 in General
Jake's acting wierd, wanting out from the screened porch. I thought it was the little dog 2 doors down that's always yelping as passers by. I open the door and realize it's a little baby rabbit he's after, a little wild, gray rabbit, can't weigh a pound, squealing lowly as jake puts his mouth around it's body "no no Jake".

I almost never say no to my dog, I usually do a little grunt noise to make him stop doing whatever he is doing I disagree with. Jake drops him, I pick it up, it settles, not moving a muscle. I lure Jake back inside and take the rabbit far into the backyard in the nature area and put it down, where it just sits for about 2 minutes. I was about to pick it up to move it further towards the woods and he hopped off.

Jake, being the tracker that he is never picked up on the smell where the rabbit layed for 2 minutes or where it hopped off to, under the fence line.

I hope I did the right thing by interferring with the hunting instinct. I suppose if it were anything but a little furry rabbit I might have waited to see exactly what Jake's intentions would have been.

eh. he doesn't really need that rabbit for food as a domestic house dog so I think you did the right thing. As much instict as they were born with, they have to succomb to our expectation of them as a house dog where we provide the boundaries. I would have done what you did, too!
Too many germs and diseases out there!!

Yeah, you never know what the rabbit was carrying. I think you did the right thing :)

Agreed. Even if that rabbit didn't have anything wrong with it, you don't want him to think that he has free reign to chase and kill anything in your yard because other animals may be carrying something you don't want him to get.
