What kind of water bowl do you use

Zoie has been drinkg out of harleys bowl but when she does she manages to get water everywhere and his isnt that small. Would one with more depth be better?

Mine is about 8" diameter, 3.5" deep - it's heavy pottery, so it doesn't go sliding.

I've used stainless steel since a breeder told me some bowls would cause acne for some dogs. I'd say medium size, medium depth.

Acne, really? Jazz's gets put in the dishwasher every night, along with her food bowl - that keeps me from letting it stay out overnight.

We use this water bowl for our Akita:

    and these for food:

The only issue we have with them is that Kona, our Kai-Ken, pulls the rubber off the bottom and chews it. :o\

Keep in mind Akita are super messy drinkers, they tend to get about 75% in their mouths and the rest on the floor.

We use a double bowl (2.8 litres) support that is adjustable in height. So it can go higher as Kuma grows.

    Something like this:

I use stainless steel around that size aswell too because plastic holds to much bacteria and harley was getting acne too (its a form of staph infection) happens if your dogs plays to much with rubber or plastic toys so they should be washed and disinfected often

Would an elevated bowl set help or should i just put the bowl on a rug and deal with messyness. Its not that big of a deal we have tile but the dogs step on the water and track foot prints throughout the house

Elevated bowls can increase the chance of bloat, keep the bowl on the floor.

All the Akitas I have ever met were messy, messy drinkers. It's like they take one last mouthful for the road, forget it's in there and drop it on the floor as they walk away.

Interesting, I had the exact opposite information. That elevated bowls decrease the chance of bloat.

Yes, from my experience, Akitas are messy drinkers.Kuma would drink water from his nose when he came home, I had to keep the water very shallow. Now he's better, doesn't stick his nose in the water anymore, but he's still messy.

LJ, we were using plastic bowls at the time for SharPei's, with skin issues to begin with.

Purdue University did a study in 1999 and 2000.

    http://www.vet.purdue.edu/epi/update2.htm

Their findings found "110% increase in risk associated with using a raised food bowl".

Probably my info was older than that. It's actually very likely that it was. Thank you Brandon!

Thanks for the info guys and the bloat stuff... we have a small dog so a big dog is a new thing for me.

When we first got Hilo I think Brandon saved [schooled] our ass on that one too ! :o)

I don't use a raised food or water bowl, but Keigo lies down to eat. I wonder if that can increase risk too.

Just put a towel under the water bowl and when the dog spills the towel keep it from getting to messy.

Once a week make sure wash the towel in your washer and make sure to wash the water bowl daily!!!!
