Jazz (shiba) rarely barks - if she does, I get up and go find what has her unsettled. In the last 9 months, I've heard her bark maybe 10-15 times, total.

Tsuki sounds a muffled alert and Kitsune is the barker. We just heard Hachi bark for the first time today. Our dogs really only bark when they have something to bark at - which includes cats outside.

I've never owned an Akita, but I could see an Akita puppy being whiney and that being normal. I've found that northern breeds, Shepherds, Beagles or Coonhounds to be pretty vocal. Although all adult Akitas I've met don't seem to make much noise.

Taj, my Shiba, is a yapper. You'd think she was a lapdog. My Dutch is the loudest dog I've ever met. He has this booming bark and chalkboard screeching whine that happens whenever I leave him by himself. This is why I love shaker cans. My dogs stop barking and whining when I shake a tin pop can duct taped closed full of pennies around them.

Hilo rarely barks, but he went through a whiny phase as a pup... Lani is a barker, she has a pretty hectic bark - I wouldn't define it as "yap", she also whines a lot right now - but this is around the age Hilo did too. It passes.
