Broke open a stitch?

edited June 2008 in General
I may be overreacting, but I'd feel better with other's opinions. Last night, in an attempt to get to me, Mylie jumped over her gate. She has never done this before, and I fear that because she was just spayed on Tuesday, that she may have split a stitch or two.
She seems mopey today, as if she's in pain, she just threw up, and her stitches do look not quite the same to me.

She probably is in pain from jumping like that. Keep an eye on her, call your vet and see if you can send them that picture through e-mail so they can look at it.

The vomiting would be a slight concern, especially if it continues. Is she on pain meds or an anti-inflammatory? Some of them can cause diarrhea and vomiting. If it happens again, I would definitely call the vet.

As for the stitches, I'm no expert but that looks ok to me. The bigger concern would be if she tore an internal stitch. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the incision from a spay surgery require stitches on the inside as well as the outside?

No external stitches, they were all internal, which is why I am concerned. It looks as though it may be slightly opened.

She is on pain meds but hasn't taken any yet today. She has started whimpering though

Dave - I thought so too, at least that's how my vet does it!

That incision looks OK, but if it concerns you - it doesn't hurt to bring her in for them to make sure! And you'd hate to wait and it get infected, just in case.
Poor baby! Can you give her 1/2 dose of pain meds?

And as added incentive, most vets I know won't charge you for a surgical followup of this nature. Just to give you piece of mind, take her in to be checked.

I'm taking her in at 3:30 this afternoon, crossing my fingers that everything is okay! Thanks to everyone for your concern, I will keep you updated.

I'm sure everything will be fine, but its nice to get the reassurance from a professional. Please do let us know how it goes.

I am glad to learn that you will be taking her in to the vet. He/she is the expert so why take anyone else's advice?
Since this is a concern, don't take any chances. Hopefully she will be just fine.

Mylie's vet visit turned into a story...
I gave her some pain meds this morning and she seemed to be doing much better, although she still slept most of the day. So 3 rolls around and I grab her leash, she is so excited, we hop in the car and she enjoys the 20 minute drive to the vet. Yes, I live pretty much live in the middle of nowhere. When we arrive, Mylie figures out where she is, and the last thing she wants to do is go inside. She fights the whole time. While in the waiting room Mylie meets a BIG lab, who she wants to check out, but is too afraid. She spends most of the time in the waiting room hiding behind my feet, and occasionally running up to the lab, barking, then running away. We met some fellow Shiba Inu owners who absolutely ADORE Mylie. They have 5 year old named Kody, but were there with their lab puppy for a check up. Apparently Kody has an electric fence, and has figured out that if he sits close enough to the perimeter, letting the collar beep but not shock him, he can run the collar dead and escape! Leave it to a Shiba to figure this out!
Finally we get into a room to see the vet, Mylie wont let the assistant hold her still while the vet checks her out, but the minute I place my hands on her she stops fussing and is so well behaved that it blows my mind. She stretched her incision when she jumped over the gate, the stitches are still holding but I have to keep a very close eye on her because another act like this will rip them. Chances are she was very sore from her jump. She had a fever, which is probably why she was sick this morning. Lucky for Mylie, this means she has to spend as much time as possible indoors in the cool air conditioning to avoid the heat.
Mylie was thrilled to leave and hop back in the car. She LOVES car rides. I'm dehydrated from this 85 degree humid heat so I stop halfway home to grab a snapple ice tea. We arrive home, I close up the tea and throw it in my purse, open the hatch of the GTI where I keep Mylie for her rides, and lift her out because the last thing I need if for her to jump. By the time we get inside I feel something cold and wet dripping all over my feet. My first reaction is to figure out what Mylie's doing! As I look down I see her sitting at my feet, her mouth wide open, catching ice tea dripping out of my purse!! It was one of the funniest things I've seen her do!

Toooooo funnny.......Thanks for the laugh at the end of a very long day. : )

I am glad everything is fine. Keeping an active dog still is not easy and never underestimate what they will do....

Glad to hear Mylie didn't do as much damage as first thought. Hard to keep these energetic ones calm while healing.

My last dog, Bandit, 7 lbs of pure fireballs, developed heart problems. I tried my best to keep him calm and away from things that might cause his little heart to race, including keeping him inside in the AC while I cut grass. But, turns out that caused him more stress because he wanted to be with me and he would just bark and bark. So I would have to calm him and let him be near me, in the heat. Kinda lesser of the 2 evils.
