dogs and chocolate.. why oh why

i'm online, eating ice cream, get up to use the loo, and come back to see Kitsune on the TABLE eating my ice cream! )@%&;)@($!&$@*!&#*^

so the ice cream is "PB Panic" and I am now.. how much chocolate can a dog get into and be OK????

doing internet quick searches right now... i think he got about a 1/4 cup or less

    Toxic Levels

    The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.

    On average,
    Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.
    Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.
    Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz.

    Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:
    1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate
    1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate
    1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.

    Oh boy....It depends on the dog's sensitivity and how loaded with chocolate it was.

    Hey my girl once drank half of a very large mug of coffee with cream with two shots of chocolate. She never had any symptoms at all. Other than being very happy she got away with sneaking. I do keep charcoal tablets here which I purchased from the health food store. I had them for a Shiba who kept eating/sneaking mushroom that kept cropping up in our yard.

    Oh forgot to mention that I am not advocating ignoring the eating of chocolate....just stating that not all dogs will be sick. Do what you feel is medically appropriate and by all means it is better to be safe than sorry by seeking medical attention for your pup than not.

    he's doing fine, just napping, but not out of it napping, just post-walk napping. I don't think it requires medical care, but if he starts to vomit or even runny stools I will take him to the E-Vet! We've been having too much 'peace' in the health department here this week - something had to give with three shibas!

    I am sure he will be fine. Again, a little dose of tums for the tmmy is a good thing.

    We had a schnauzer jump up on a table and clean out a full bag of m&ms. then throw them up 20 min later. She was fine. I don't know that that would generally be the case, throwing everything up in a multicolor m&m rainbow probably helped with that. But a square of a Hershey bar is less than an oz.
