Yellow Jackets sting Tasha
Someone had to mention bees, eh? This morning, Ronan kept sniffing and licking Tasha's neck. Within minutes she was pacing. Five minutes later, one eye was horribly swollen. I thought she'd gotten a black eye playing rough with him earlier in the morning. Within minutes, the other eye swelled.
I instantly knew she'd been stung, so I gave her a Benedryl. Ronan kept sniffing her neck, which now had blood on it. Apparently, she'd scratched it till it bled. It was swollen, too. A huge lump. I gave her another benedryl and got ready to rush to the ER vet. But the swelling started to go down in one eye, and her breathing seemed okay, so we waited and watched her like a hawk.
The swelling is about gone from both eyes, and has subsided some in her neck. She's had 50mg, which is all she can have for a 8 hr period. She's in good spirits and resting.
I'll give her another 25mg later tonight - can't use too much since there are adverse reactions for dogs with thyroid issues who take too much benedryl.
It never ends lately, does it?
Good on Ronan for sniffing out something was wrong. He's done this a lot - several months ago, Ronan kept sniffing at a mole on Ray's face. He finally went to the doctor and yep - it was indeed cancerous. Had it removed and all is well. Ronan's little sniffer is really something.
Keep your fingers crossed for Tasha. It's scary having a dog so allergic to bee stings. She's been stung once before, but it wasn't nearly this bad.

Ronan is such a good pup - good boy!

I guess we all share the bad news around here. From bee stings to neuter complications :-/
I'd hope that if there were going to be problems, we'd see it before nightfall, but yeah... I don't imagine I'll sleep much tonight for checking on her. Of course, that means I'll keep waking her up to see if she's okay...
I hope she keeps doing well. Take good care of her and keep us informed. And don't forget to give Ronan some extra lovin for being such a good boy!
Ronan is still licking her neck and even smells and licks the floor where she's laid. I wonder why that still is? What does he smell?
I hope the worst is over and that I don't have anything to worry about. I'll give her another benedryl shortly. 25mg only this round. I don't think she needs a 2nd one. I held off on both her anti-biotics and her thyroid meds in attempt to thwart any possible interactions.
The bees are rough on the dogs.. I wish I could stop mine from trying to catch them.. with her mouth!
Let us know how the night goes, but it sound like the worst has passed.

How is Tasha feeling?
But wow Ronan! That is amazing.
I did give her another single dose this morning because she just seems so itchy. There's a tiny bit of redness around her muzzle and her eyes, but no swelling. Ithink it is just left-over skin irritation and it's easy to see on a pure white dog.
Ronan is still sniffing the spot, but of course it's easy for him to see this huge reddish-pink spot on her neck, and I put Neosporin on it. Maybe he knew the stinger was still there, which is pretty incredible. A dog's sense of smell is what? 10,000 times stronger than ours? I suppose it could be that the stinger and the venom leave some sort of topical smell?
Anyway, she polished her bowl in typical Akita fashion - just like yesterday. She refused to go outside again, so I had to usher her out and make her pee this morning. I don't know if she is refusing to go out because of the sting, the hot weather, or that the grass was wet this morning (she hates to touch wet grass).
Yes, Ronan is such a good boy. He gets into a lot, and is live-wire, but he's really just a smart boy with too much energy and not enough work and no real play-mates. Tasha is 8.5, and since Akitas don't have the energy level a Shikoku does, he's pretty bored. But he LOVES to play 'find-it' a lot. I hide his toys, which he loves.
