Shiba Inu small enough to carry in a bag?

Hello, everyone!

Though I've registered months ago, this is my first time actually talking here!

I don't have a Shiba Inu yet, but once my husband and I move (soon) this is definitely the dog we want!

Now, I don't want a little toy for a dog. But back to my question, if I were to go shopping or out somewhere where my pup wouldn't be allowed to walk on leash, are shibas small enough that you could carry them on your shoulder in a doggie back?

Thanks!

-Michelle

Welcome! It truly depends on your dog - shibas can range in size & temperament (like any other dog). My shiba is 17.5 lbs and would love to be held so she would probably do well - I know other shibas that are not as welcoming to being held so that might not work.

I would not consider a Shiba to be a bag dog, unless you want the bag destroyed from the inside out.

LOL! My niece wants me to buy a bag so she could carry Jazz - I've yet to find one that is sturdy enough (most are made for dogs under 10 lbs) - I didn't realize that they made dog packs, though.

I once carried Moto in my messenger bag because the poor little guy was exhausted from the heat. I personally would rather shoot myself then EVER do that again.

Shiba's are NOT bag dogs, unless you are about 6'4

I have to agree with Brandon and Jessica. Shiba's are sooooo energetic, they'd much rather walk and check out the world than be confined in a bag. I can only Imagine what would happen if I put Mylie in a bag... First of all, she hates to be carried, or held. The bag would either be destroyed, or she'd become an escape artist. Right now she's about 13lbs, but she's not light by any means; she's very dense, heavy, muscular weight and it'd be more work for me to try to carry her than walking her on a leash. Especially since, as I picture this in my head; if I did manage to get her in a bag, she would probably dig in it, tossing me around as I try to walk!

    Welcome...

As small pups Shibas can be carried some but probably would not make a good pocket dog. Once they grow a bit (happens very quickly) their independent exploring instinct takes hold so most will not appreciate being in a bag at all. Keeping a Shiba in the house and yard is challenging enough without door bolting, I can only image it would be worse with a bag. Lugging a bag with a Shiba in it would be back breaking to say the least, unless you are an extremely large person. Say Hulk Hogan. (LOL)

No. You shouldn't, shiba is the wrong breed for that, I'm sure other breeds might be more accommodating, or even an older smaller-than-shiba shelter dog would like it.

Like everyone, esp SnF said, its already a challenge keeping them in the house and in the yard!
