I have given this one a great deal of thought lately, and we are really blessed* with our pack of 3 shibas. I have wanted a shikoku for some time but I think, at least for the next few years, I will hold off. We will be fostering and hopefully rescuing too in the meantime. If we ever do decide in the coming years to expand the pack in terms of a new breed, I am very excited to think about Kai, Shikoku or Hokkaido if its possible. But, I'm going to let myself see where the future leads us and we will know which of the three breeds will better suit our life at that point. --- Can I ask why a Jamthund?
--- *I had to edit this, blessed in terms of they all get along to the point where we can leave them together uncrated for the day and night without incident now. They still run me over and out, because, well, they are shibas. But as pack dynamics go, we are blessed.
Jen - Its really cool that you have seen the worst and the best as far as pack dynamics go. Without seeing the bad stuff you can't really appreciate the good stuff. You'll be writing books on Shiba behavior soon I'm sure! )

I dunno that I will get another breed anytime soon - we have enough. If I was going to tho, it would be a Tibetan Mastiff or a Russo-European Laika.
My next dog is going to be an Akita without question. After that (and this is probably 10+ years down the road) I will probably get a Tamaskan, but there are a lot of other dogs on the list so that may change between now and then.
tsukitsune- I want a wolf-like spitz breed, one that I can do outdoor activities with, train in agility/obedience, and have a companion as well as a guard dog. they can also be good off leash if trained properly. plus they are gorgeous dogs. caught my eye the moment I first saw one in a dog book. Unfortunately, there are none here in North America. I would have to import one from Sweden, Norway or Poland. I've been in contact with several breeders from there, but it's hard to find one that speaks english. so far, one has replied that they only sell dogs to hunters, and am still awaiting a reply from the others. Hoping that not all the breeders have this attitude. I'm moving up north in september, where hopefully I'll have a larger property where I'll be able to keep such a demanding (in terms of exercise) breed.
Jamthunds sounds like a great breed to own in your lifetime! I hope you succeed in getting one and letting us know how they are! -- Laikas are beautiful, brad! and it is true - as great as a lot dog breeds are, I have experienced very bad, ill fitting dogs to the pack and I have experienced great additions to the pack dynamic. I am really enjoying the three as they are now and as they continue to develop, its hard to really think about additions now! too much! but those brindle Hokkas are too beautiful not to really want to experience one! I don't think I'm ready for that degree of nihon ken yet! maybe after my shiba book... )
After having a new pack member for two weeks, we are thinking about another shiba inu, also bearing in mind that everything in dog life could change immediately, we are working on importing another hokkaido inu later this year.
