Adventures of 'Porkchop' - WARNING, LONG POST

edited July 2008 in Akita (秋田犬)
We haven't settled on a name yet, but Kurt wants to name him Kuma. Which is beautiful, but there are already three Kuma's on this site!.

Things are going just fine. The introduction went so well!!! We introduced the pup to our pack through a fence. Mika was so well-behaved and I am such a proud mama over that! Before Porkchop came out, a pit was auditioning for the role of new dog (I don't think he got it *sniff*). Mika tried to charge the fence towards the pit. When Porkchop came out, she was calm and curious. Mika did correct him twice, but no snapping or charging!

Afterword, I went into the office to fill out some paperwork. I had Mika and Keigo wandering around the lobby while Porkchop sat quietly in a corner. Mika and Keigo barely acknowledged Porkchop. Mika even gave out some Woo Woo's to her new friends at the shelter!!!!! Of course, Jessica and Jason were the only ones not afraid. Mika's Woo Woo, sometimes sounds like a growl or grumble.

On the LONG way home (Kurt went road exploring - we should have gotten home at 6pm, we got home at 10pm), we stopped to have a bite and took the dogs for a walk together. Poor Porkchop just LOVES to keep up with the big dogs.....and get under their legs....and got peed on by Mika!!

It was sooo funny! Mika was SHOCKED. She didn't know what the heck to do. A puppy just shot under her legs out of nowhere! Just the look on her face was like 'DID YOU SEE THAT?'. She quickly turned, her eyes got really big, she looked at me and then Porkchop. So funny.

BTW, just from his poop, I KNOW he's going to be big! I've got another super pooper on my hands. I think he might rival Keigo, Dave. LOL. OH! And I think Miss Mika loves Porkchop but doesn't know what to make of him. I seems like a common Akita trait. They rub on another dog - like Ahi and Mika on towels.

During our dinner walk, Mika got so happy, she rubbed on Porkchop! Ugh. I HATE it when she does it to little dogs. They just disappear. Poor little Porker yelped, wrangled free and ran away. LMAO. It was soooo funny.

Jessica and Jason, you'll be happy to hear that Porkchop is not at all timid anymore. We made a few stops and tons of people were petting and loving him. He had NO qualms about them.

Home, however, was a little more difficult. My babies aren't as conservative as they are outside. They were really crowding and herding/hunting the little guy, but Porkchop poured on the charm and continued to wag his tail. He stands on his hind leg and paw at Mika. It's so sweet.

He did manage to get corrected a few times. Mostly over food. He just ran up to Keigo and Mika's bowls and started to eat. Um, Keigo handled that error. Of course, now, I have to DRAG him into the bedroom (where Mika and Keigo's food is currently). When Mika went to drink out of Porkchops bowl and the little guy went over to see what was going on, Mika corrected him again. A little harsh. There was a look involved....not just growling like before.

Also, at around 3am, after a short walk, he ran up to Keigo to play. OOPS. Don't bother a tired adult, silly bear. Funny thing is, when I put Porkchop into the crate, I found that Keigo had run up onto the bed. It seemed like he was scared - I did scold him (which I hardly EVER do), but not harshly. I guess he didn't expect the baby to run up to him like that.

PS, Porkchop's perfect in a crate and when he has to pee (which was 3xs last night) he whines to get let out. What a good baby.....please find him a home.....

That's great!!!!!! I'm so happy to they behaved so well. He sounds like a really confident little man. :-)

One question: where are the pictures?!?! :-P
  • edited November -1
I will definitely post pix later, have to run to work.

Some annoying news. Kurt is already treating this pup like a baby. He just had him on the bed. Grrrr. Mika and Keigo are defensive enough as it is and he's creating a mess. Frick. I thought I would only have to train a puppy, not a man.

"I thought I would only have to train a puppy, not a man." LOL barbara!!

I'm so glad its going well! I have the word out about the pup - you are in NYC, right?
Did you consider having the Klemko Akita Rescue, or another close one, put a courtesy listing up for Porkchop? They'll put him on their website or petfinder as a referral.

Ok. His new name is Koji - supposed to mean little or child. Will post pix oon.
  • edited November -1
I like Koji. It feels much better to say than Porkchop. I can not wait to see pics. I miss his little face already.
  • edited November -1
Koji is a very cool name!

This is all working out really great. Meka and Keigo seem to be doing great. Are any of the Akita rescues letting you list Koji on their site?

Koji's introduction sounds like it went great. Can't wait to see pics.

I can't find my flash drive. But, I wanted to write....I just spoke with Kurt...this is what he said....

'Maybe it's a good idea to add another dog to the pack. Maybe it will help calm Mika down'

I, on the other hand, haven't gotten at all emotional about Koji. Is that mean? I really hope Kathy from the Akita Rescue of WNY can find a home for Koji.
  • edited November -1
Its not mean, clearly we can't have emotions about every dog we meet in distress otherwise I'd run myself into the ground or be labeled a hoarder!! But there are dogs that really touch you and pull at your heartstrings, and even then sometimes you know in your heart they are going to find a perfect home, even if its not with you.

Koji is a cutie though, and I really think he is meant for bigger things and that perfect family is out there waiting to love on him forever.. he was meant to be rescued by amazing hands and helped on to his next adventures - whatever they may be!

Is the Akita Rescue of WNY going to screen applicants? Or are you?

Is he mixed with GSD? he is going to be a little heartbreaker. :)
  • edited November -1
He's so cute! Does he ever move from that spot? lol
  • edited November -1
He is really cute! He looks a lot smaller than in the pics that Jess had posted. Maybe its because you can see the size difference between him and mika.
  • edited November -1
    Yeah, I agree Romi.

Barbara, perhaps it got lost in translation, but Kurt's suggestion of adding another dog didn't have to mean Koji. I think Jen made an excellent point. I love pretty much all dogs I come into contact with, but some of them touch my heart. Some I develop an instant bond with and others no matter how much time I spend with them I never really get that close to. So don't feel weird about Koji. He may just not be the right dog for your pack.

    The pics are great btw!

So cute! Thanks for the pictures.

Ok. So the Akita Rescue of WNY found an adopter for Koji....BUT, they want to neuter him first!!!! Little guy's probably only 8 - 10 weeks old. They say they neuter their pups at 9 weeks!!!!
  • edited November -1
9 weeks?!? I thought 5-6 months was the norm?
  • edited November -1
More like 6 to 9 months. Though, 12 months is better.
  • edited November -1
    9 weeks?! WTF?
I guess they don't see how testosterone can be important for growth...
  • edited November -1
Wow! I had no idea. Is it the same for spaying?
  • edited November -1
With a lot of rescues, the phrase "too early" is not in the vocabulary for spaying/neutering. It gets done before the dog is adopted out, end of story.
  • edited November -1
Just to pipe in.....we also have had some rescues in for pediatric spay and neuter that early because there was no option. The shelter mandated it before anyone was allowed to foster. Those animals recovered quickly and as adults now seem to be no worse for it. It should not be a problem medically unless the pup is sick ....the pups usually have maybe 3 stitches at most when all is said and done. The recovery time was so quick with very little side effects.

its actually a very necessary and common practice in rescue. SnF is right on, the younger pups - if there are no health compromises - recover in lightning speed from the procedure.

We neutered Maui at just over three months - with smaller breeds I don't think its a problem. With a large breed like the Akita, being neutered to early, could really mess them up. From what I understand, larger breeds need the testosterone help make sure they don't grow to fast - testosterone is what keeps dogs from growing to fast - I may be totally wrong on that tho, that's just what I remember hearing from a vet... and what I remember and reality can sometimes be WAY off.

Having said that, I certainly see why rescue groups want the neutered before adoption.

That's pretty amazing they found a home for him so fast!
